MTV Movie & TV Awards 2021: Chadwick Boseman wins Best Performance for 'Ma Rainey's Black Bottom', fans say 'this one hurts'

Boseman played the role of a trumpet player in ‘Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom’ who constantly challenged his older bandmates with his quirks

Late Chadwick Boseman won the Best Performance in a movie for his final role in ‘Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom’ at the 2021 edition of MTV Movie & TV Awards. Boseman, who had also scooped a posthumous Golden Globes award in February 2021, gained wide acclaim for his role alongside Viola Davis.

Presenter Yara Shahidi accepted the coveted award on the late actor’s behalf. The renowned model and activist also spoke about Boseman’s everlasting impact. “His impact is everlasting and we are eternally grateful for the way his presence and his art have changed the world."  A lot of social media users got emotional as soon as Boseman was announced as the winner. Boseman, who died at the age of 43 in August 2020 after battling colon cancer, portrayed the role of a trumpet player in ‘Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom’ who constantly challenged his older bandmates with his quirks.

Incidentally, the award ceremony has taken a different route this year. The show will be divided into two parts. While the main ceremony was held on day one, the inaugural 'Movie & TV Awards: Unscripted' will air at 9pm ET on May 17, 2021. Day one of the event was hosted by Leslie Jones from Palladium in Los Angeles while the second day will be hosted by Nikki Glaser.

This is the first time that Palladium in Los Angeles has been chosen as the MTV Movie & TV Awards venue. Barker Hangar, the Shrine Auditorium and Warner Bros Studios were some of the earlier venues.  

‘I still cry that Chadwick Boseman isn't here anymore’

Boseman, who enjoyed a massive fan following across the world, got emotional tributes from his loyal fans on Twitter. Many rushed to the micro-blogging site to share how much they miss the actor. One fan posted, “I still cry that Chadwick Boseman isnt here anymore. Every time I hear his name or read something about him, I just break down in tears. I really love that man.”

Another fan tweeted, “And Chadwick won too I think we should cancel all other shows because MTV has done everything right tonight.” One fan said, “Truly well deserved Chadwick #MTVAwards OUR BLACK PANTHER FOREVER." One added, “MTV awards went all out for Chadwick than the Oscars.” Echoing similar sentiments, one user concluded, “I just know Chadwick Boseman is smiling from heaven congratulations.” One said, "Chadwick Boseman has won the #MTVAward for Best Performance in a Movie for his performance in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom. His legacy lives on." Another said, "Oh this one hurts."
