South Korean singer and dancer, Shownu, has announced that he is taking a break from the entertainment industry to join the military this month, July 2021. Shownu, whose real name is Son Hyun-woo, became famous as the main dancer and vocalist in the South Korean boy band Monsta X. Taking to the group’s official fan café, the 29-year-old wrote, “From July 22, I will be taking a short hiatus as I fulfill my national defence duties. It feels like just yesterday when I made my debut, but now it’s time for me to go to the military.”

Continuing further, he stated: “As I worked hard until now, I have experienced both joy and hardship and various meaningful moments with the members and the fans. The love and support that I’ve received from fans is not just the love between one person and another but something much bigger than that. There were times when I unconsciously began to take it for granted and times when I realized that I shouldn’t.”

Shownu also went on to thank his fans for all the love and support they have given him. He said, “Thank you for letting me feel and experience so many things through MONSTA X. I will do my best to repay you, so please continue to have fun with MONSTA X and Shownu. Thank you so much for letting me realize that I am able to live through new things each day,” before adding, “Regardless of whether I’m living a good or bad life, I think I’m just a happy person. Since I started talking about life just because I won’t be able to promote for a little bit, I must be nervous. Anyway, thank you and stay happy and healthy. Letters should end abruptly, right? Love you always. Yes, I love you, and let’s meet again soon.”

A statement has also been issued by MONSTA X’s agency, Starship Entertainment, that said that the ‘High-End Crush’ star will enlist in the military and enter the training center on July 22. Initially, for three weeks, he will undergo basic training before heading towards the rest of his mandatory military service. He will reportedly serve as a public service worker because earlier he underwent surgery for retinal detachment in his left eye and also suffered a dislocated shoulder.

Meanwhile, though people on Twitter were sad because of Shownu’s break, they also showed their support to him. One fan tweeted, “WE WILL WAIT FOR SHOWNU.” The second one wrote, “After 22nd July, timeline will be filled with ‘Remember when Shownu…’” A user said, “Since shownu will enlist as a public service worker, Shownu can still stay and live at their dorms. This means that he will still see the members everyday and of course he will still post things!! This made me so happy :(((.”

“Come back safe, Shownu. Although time flies so fast, we'll still gonna miss you. Lots of love and stay healthy,” a fan said and another one added: “Our strong gracious leader with the cutest eye smile. Gifted from head to toe, beautiful inside & out. Hope we gave you a tiny bit in return of all you gave us. Stay heathy & eat well. Counting the days... WE WILL WAIT FOR SHOWNU.”
