After opening to magnanimous praise and applause from the audience at the Sundance Film Festival and later winning an award at SXSW in March, Channing Godfrey Peoples' 'Miss Juneteenth' is all set for its virtual theatrical release this month. A beautiful coming-of-age story of a rebellious teen and her perseverant mother aiming to stop her from repeating her own mistakes, the film arrives right in time to commemorate the abolition of slavery in Texas, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. The celebration includes an annual pageant and 'Miss Juneteenth' navigates the mother-daughter relationship revolving around the same pageant. Here's all you need to know about it.

According to the official IMDb synopsis, the film highlights the journey of "a former beauty queen and single mom preparing her rebellious teenage daughter for the 'Miss Juneteenth' pageant."

Cast

Nicole Beharie stars as Turquoise Jones, the former pageant winner-turned-hardworking single mother who is preparing her daughter for 'Miss Juneteenth'. Turquoise's story sees her try earnestly to keep her rebellious teen daughter Kai from following in her footsteps, with Alexis Chikaeze playing the role of Kai. The film also stars Kendrick Sampson as Ronnie, Lori Hayes as Charlotte, Marcus M Mauldin as Wayman, Liz Mikel as Betty Ray, Akron Watson as Bacon, Phyllis Cicero as Mrs Washington, Lisha Hackney as Clarissa, Mathew Greer as Rev Patterson, Jaime Matthis as Quintavious, and Margaret Sanchez as Mrs Cee.

'Miss Juneteenth' marks writer-director Channing Godfrey Peoples' feature debut. Peoples is also known for films like 'Red', 'David's Reverie' and 'Kwame'. Vertical Entertainment is the distributor.
