Millie Bobby Brown, who turned 18 on February 19, 2022, has spoken up about the noticeable shift in the way fans and media have treated her since becoming a 'legal adult'. The 'Stranger Things' star says she is being flooded with more and more lewd, inappropriate, and sexualized comments now.

Millie shed light on the many challenges she faced while growing up in the public eye on The Guilty Feminist podcast. She further confessed that she does not share anything from her personal life on social media. Instead, she only shares things she 'wants to put out in the world.'

“I have definitely been dealing with that more within the last two weeks of turning 18 — definitely seeing a difference between the way people act and the way that the press and social media have reacted to me coming of age,” Millie added. “I believe that that shouldn’t change anything, but it’s gross and it’s true, and…it’s a very good representation of what’s going on in the world and how young girls are sexualized.”

She also feels like her own experience is not very different from any other 18-year-old and in a word, she said it can be 'overwhelming'. "I deal with the same things any 18-year-old is dealing with. Navigating being an adult and having relationships and friendships, and it's all of those things."

She then added, "Being liked and trying to fit in, it's all a lot, and you're trying to [know] yourself while doing that. The only difference is obviously I'm doing that in the public eye. It can be really overwhelming."

She spoke of a major change she made. Instead of sharing all about her life, she started using her influence for a good cause. She said, "I'm not posting anything personal anymore. You're not gonna see that part of me. You get to see the things I choose to put out in the world. I hope if there's a 12-year-old that's told Instagram they're 18, and they've created an account, they're going on my account and they're not being exploited to the horrible world that's out there."

Millie also recalled being “crucified” for wearing a lower-cut gown to an awards show when she was just 16 years old, with fans saying she looked like she was in her 60s. “I was like, ‘What’s wrong with a 60 year old?'” she said. “I thought ‘My, is this really what we’re talking about? We should be talking about the incredible people that were there at the award show.'”

Though social media brings us closer, Millie shared her dislike for it. "I think social media is the worst place of all time."

Two years ago, in 2020, Millie suffered several insecurities owing to the negative comments she received online. Recalling that, she said, "Our world needs kindness and support in order for us children to grow and succeed. There are moments I get frustrated from the inaccuracy, inappropriate comments, sexualization, and unnecessary insults that ultimately have resulted in pain and insecurity for me."

Millie added, "I hope this video informs you on the things that go on behind the scenes of the headlines and flashing lights. don't worry I'll always find a way to smile." as she concluded.
