With the defamation trial finally coming to a close and the jury deciding in favor of Johnny Depp against Amber Heard, celebrities are pouring out their support for Heard. Mia Farrow and Edward Norton have both voiced their support for her after her contentious legal fight with Johnny Depp. The verdict was read on Wednesday, June 1.

Depp has been receiving support since the beginning of the trial, including from the likes of Paul McCartney, who displayed photos of the former Captain Jack Sparrow onscreen during his performances and ex-girlfriend Kate Moss, who once spoke out in a viral moment. In stark contrast, support for Heard has been quite muted. For instance, her 'Aquaman' co-star Jason Momoa deliberately decided to like the post-trial messages on both Heard and Depp's Instagram pages, implying that, despite being friends with Heard, he is not taking sides.

Even her most prominent pals, such as Margot Robbie and Cara Delevingne, have remained silent about the trial. However, the tide appears to be turning as some Hollywood celebs are now openly defending the actress.

Industry divided over support for Heard

Mia Farrow battled with her own spectacular custody fight for her children with Woody Allen, who married Farrow's adopted daughter after dating her for years. Farrow posted a New Yorker article titled 'The Depp-Heard Verdict Is Chilling' by Jessica Winter. Domestic abuse victims who are following the outcome of the trial may feel "disbelieved, shamed, and ostracised," according to Winter. Meanwhile, actor Edward Norton liked a tweet from film critic AO Scott that said "Men need to be honest about what happened here" The tweet includes a link to an op-ed in the New York Times titled 'The Actual Malice of the Johnny Depp Trial.' Amy Schumer, on the other hand, appeared to defend Heard before withdrawing her support.

On June 2, Schumer posted a screenshot of a quotation from feminist icon Gloria Steinem that stated, "Any woman who chooses to behave like a full human being should be warned that the armies of the status quo will treat her as something of a dirty joke . . . She will need her sisterhood." The tweet soon gained media attention, with both readers and detractors believing it was meant to show support for Heard. She also posted on Instagram, "FYI I did not watch a second of that trial. Can we maybe work on ending gun violence?"

TV celebrity Padma Lakshmi appeared to agree, commenting, "Word." Naomi Watts posted a succession of hands-up and heart emojis, while Julianne Moore reacted with three hearts.

Actress Julia Fox was chastised online in May for stating that Heard was incapable of actually abusing Depp due to his physical and financial strength in comparison to her. Singer Aubrey O'Day labeled Fox's statement "trash," but Fox did not retract it.

In the early days of the trial, Ireland Baldwin, model and daughter of Alec Baldwin, labeled Heard a "disaster of a human being," emphasizing her loathing of women who mistreat men.

She then regretted her remarks. "I regret chiming in about the whole thing because the reality of it is that it's all very sad,"  she remarked in an Instagram Q&A. "And I feel bad in different ways for the both of them. I was trying to [be] clear that men can be abused as well and anyone who thinks differently is an idiot." David Krumholtz, who co-starred with Heard in the 2011 television series 'The Playboy Club', had harsh words for Depp. He posted in his Instagram story: "Drugs and alcohol turn men into monsters. I believe Amber Heard," he stated on Instagram. "She is not innocent. But she IS a victim. Johnny Depp's smugness during the trial is sickening."

The six-week trial captivated the globe because it was streamed live whenever the court was in action. Depp sued ex-wife Heard for $50 million over three paragraphs in a 2018 op-ed co-written with the American Civil Liberties Union and published in the Washington Post (ACLU). Heard countersued for $100 million over comments made by Depp and his entourage about her. The jury found Heard guilty on all counts of defamation and sentenced her to pay $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive penalties to Depp.
