'Disgrace to women’s rights': Petition to cancel Amber Heard as ACLU ambassador crosses 70k signatures
A petition has been launched calling for Amber Heard's status as ACLU Women's Rights Ambassador to be revoked. As the defamation trial between Amber Heard and Johnny Depp is near its conclusion Depp fans launched the petition on Change.org which read "Remove Amber Heard as ACLU Ambassador of Women’s Rights" and has been signed by 76,381 participants as of Wednesday, June, 1.
During the court struggle, the 'Aquaman' actress claimed that she contributed $3.5 million of her divorce settlement money to the American Civil Liberties Union. Depp's lawyers, on the other hand, established that she did not meet the requirement. The 36-year-old actress stated in 2016 that she was dedicated to donating the sum to the ACLU and the Children's Hospital of Los Angeles. However, Depp's lawyer Camille Vasquez interrogated Heard in court about not donating the money to the charities. Last month, the ACLU's Chief Operating Officer testified that Heard only donated $1.3 million of the $3.5 million she had promised. Despite the court's findings, Amber Heard continues to serve as an ACLU ambassador, which has infuriated the public. Many of Depp's witnesses said that Heard assaulted him violently. Since then, the actress has faced a storm of online abuse.

The ACLU released a statement on their official website following the defamation trial, clarifying that they did not write the op-ed piece "on her behalf in exchange for her pledge to donate money to the ACLU." They also revealed that in 2016, the actress agreed to contribute the money to the ACLU over a ten-year period. Amber Heard was designated an ambassador two years later, according to the website, after she collaborated on the now-famous op-ed piece published by The Washington Post.

Netizens are outraged that Amber Heard is still an ambassador for the group, despite the domestic abuse charges against her. As a result, Crystal Moore started a petition to withdraw the actress' ambassadorship. It said: “The Depp vs. Heard trial has brought much of this to light as well as other stories of abuse to other women and Johnny Depp. Additionally, her personal story was full of lies and slander. She is not deserving of role as ambassador. She’s a disgrace to women and women’s rights. She is an abuser and needs to be removed immediately!!!”
In addition to accusing Amber Heard of attacking Johnny Depp, the Change.org petition revealed that she had been accused of abusing another lady.
Amber Heard was detained by the Port of Seattle Police on September 14, 2009, after she reportedly grabbed and hit her then-girlfriend, photographer Tasya van Ree.
After Amber Heard claimed she was a victim of domestic abuse in a December 2018 op-ed piece in The Washington Post, Johnny Depp sued his ex-wife and actress Heard for $50 million. Despite the fact that the piece did not identify Depp by name, his attorneys said that the story had made clear assumptions, which had a negative impact on the actor's career. The actress' attorneys claimed that her freedom of expression protected her op-ed essay. She has subsequently countersued her ex-husband for domestic assault, seeking $100 million in damages.
