'Thunder Force' stars Melissa McCarthy and Octavia Spencer fail miserably in Jimmy Fallon's BFF Showdown
Octavia Spencer and Melissa McCarthy were on 'The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon' on tonight's episode, April 20. Before introducing them, Jimmy mentioned that the two have been best friends for almost 20 years.
They had also filmed for the superhero comedy film 'Thunder Force' in the recent past and the film is set to release next year.
Jimmy had a "BFF Showdown" planned for the ladies where each of them answers questions related to each other to determine who knows the other better. Staying true to their comedic excellency, both of them played the game pretty well.
They gave all the wrong answers but took away a million points for bringing the laughs. Here's a lowdown on how it went.
When asked what college Octavia went to, Melissa after a lot of thinking came up with "I don't think she went to school". "I definitely went to school", quipped Spencer. In the end, she guessed the wrong college. For everyone at home, Octavia went to Auburn University, Alabama.
Octavia herself was pretty confused when Jimmy asked if Melissa is married and she went with the "pass" option. Melissa couldn't believe it and said I will give you a clue, "Ben" but it seems like Octavia couldn't catch on to it even when Melissa said, "Well he's not my cousin."
"Is it Octavia Octavia?" said Mellisa when she had to guess Octavia's last name and she came up with the answer because she thought it rhymes with her first name. A disappointed Octavia asked Jimmy, "Can we edit all this?"
The next question was for Melissa and given her "amazing" performance in the game so far, Jimmy decided to play it safe and give her a hint and mentioned she can look at her right now on video.
"Is she wearing green?", asked Octavia squinting at the screen while adjusting her glasses. "You are wearing green? are you looking at yourself?" exclaimed Melissa on hearing the answer.
The ladies then told Jimmy that they are not really friends and their relationship is pretty "Hollywood" and when the camera turns off, they stop. They also said it's like how Jimmy's hired those two little girls to play his daughters.
"Those are my real daughters," said Jimmy while Octavia and Melissa laughed. "The woman you hired to play your wife, she's too good. Almost convinced that she's your wife," said Octavia.
After the fun game, Jimmy asked what they've been upto these days and Melissa almost led Jimmy to believe that her parents are divorcing. She mentioned, "I'm in LA with my family. My mom is here, my mom and dad got separated. My dad went to Illinois and my mom decided to stay an extra week and I have mom with me in quarantine."
Jimmy asked if her parents are separated to which Melissa quickly added," I should clarify my parents are only physically separated. I am not announcing their divorce."
Octavia said she's in LA as well and is currently video conferencing from the kitchen. On being asked if she's good in the kitchen, she mentioned, "I am not. No one wants me in the kitchen. I am just wingin' it, living off on other friends kitchen skills,"
Melissa is also observing Beer O'clock this quarantine with her husband Ben Falcone and the timing of it just keeps moving up to a point where their kids have to intervene and say it's too early in the day for that.
It was also revealed that Octavia is just like all of our parents and grandparents when it comes to video calling. Melissa revealed that earlier in the day they were on a zoom call and all she could see was 98% ceiling and a little bit of her forehead.
Turns out she didn't know that she could install Zoom on the laptop as well and thought it only works on the phone. Jimmy mentioned that his dad feels his computer doesn't have a camera even though there is one right on top of his screen.
They might've tricked everyone into thinking they are "non-friends" but Octavia and Melissa have known each other for 20 years now. They first met at Groundlings in LA.
Octavia was a close friend of Tate Taylor, director of a play Melissa was working on. Octavia's infectious laugh helped with the show going better to a point that they stopped doing shows without her in the audience. "We've been stuck together since then, delightfully," said Melissa with a smile.
Speaking about their film 'Thunder Force', both of them admitted that it was a wonderful experience and it was all hard work and a lot of love and laughs throughout the journey. 'The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon' airs on weeknights on NBC.
