Meghan Markle makes heads turn with strapless dress in shiny gold at New York gala
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: The Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle was shining like gold at the Ms Foundation's Women of Vision Awards 2023 on Tuesday, May 16. Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan made a rare joint outing to attend the gala in New York City.
Meghan, one of the honorees, made an explosive entrance with her sleeveless Johanna Ortiz dress in a metallic gold hue. Harry stood by his wife while wearing a traditional midnight blue suit, a white button-up, a light blue tie, and black dress shoes. Doria Ragland, Meghan's mother, also attended the big day donning a black minidress with sheer bishop sleeves and chic slingback shoes.

What did Meghan Markle wear at the Women of Vision gala?
Meghan selected a dress from the women-owned Colombian brand Johanna Ortiz in order to receive the Women of Vision Award. To further highlight the appearance, she made the decision to add her own style by leaving the straps off the Ideal Universe Midi-Dress. The Duchess accessorized the dress with a pair of 'naked' $1,350 gold heels by Tom Ford. The ankle strap had an eccentric padlock and key design. "Anchored by a sculptural metal heel, Tom Ford's Naked sandals are crafted of gleaming metallic leather in Italy," the online description says. "This pair is styled with signature lock hardware at the dainty ankle strap."
Meghan also wore a Cartier Love Bracelet for $7,350 and a Carolina Herrera Metropolitan Insignia clutch worth $1,100. Meghan completed her ensemble with a reasonably priced pair of hoop earrings from J Crew, choosing a sold-out style with large clear stones all around the hoop.
Who is the designer?
Johanna Ortiz, the Colombian-born fashion enthusiast, who created Meghan's evening dress, studied fashion design at the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale before "rounding up her formal education" in New York and Paris. She later moved back to her native country where she launched her own label. Johanna makes it plain on her website that she is dedicated to supporting and advocating for women's rights, stating that "Johanna has kept her commitment to social causes and female empowerment a cornerstone of her design and business ethos."
