Meghan Markle moans about what 'white hairdresser' would do to her hair on podcast with Mariah Carey
Meghan Markle recently welcomed the pop icon, Mariah Carey, to her 'Archetypes' podcast on Tuesday, August 30 and the two stars discussed the difficulties of dealing with natural hair in Hollywood. The Duchess of Sussex's podcast aims to explore the several labels which hold women back in their life and career.
Mariah Carey recalled on the podcast, “people were saying, ‘girl next door’ … because there was also this ambiguity about me, racially, that fed into that, and those curls.” The 53-year-old Grammy winner was speaking about her 1993 music video for 'Dreamlover.'

Mariah said, “Here’s the thing, they didn’t know how to do my hair, because if it was a white hairdresser that had never dealt with textured hair, they would tend to do a different thing. And my hair would be like, ‘You’re not doing that!'”
Mariah said that even if she was assigned a hairstylist, “it would become too much product and too much weight.” Meghan too shared her experience and talked about having her hair “shellacked” by “so much heavy hair grease” in the past, when the hair experts would try to “slick those roots down.” The 'Obsessed' singer added “nobody knew how to do [her] hair, even as a little girl. I think sometimes when it’s the other way around, you get the benefit of someone who’s dealt with textured hair.”
The Duchess of Sussex, who recently showed her natural texture during a video call, remembered her childhood experience with her maternal grandmother Jeannette. Meghan said, “she’d say, ‘just hold on to the sink,’ and I would grip my little hands on both sides,” adding, “you have no luxury of being tender-headed.”
Meghan also shared how she was a Mariah Carey fan from the beginning. She said, “when I was a young teenager, I wanted to dress, look, be, sing, do everything like Mariah Carey.” The Duchess continued, “she was so glamorous and fabulous and talented. She was successful. And she was mixed, like me. She was an aspirational figure I could see … and you have to see it to believe it, they say. Well, I could see her. And it made me feel like I was also seen.”
However, during the same interaction, Meghan was shocked when Mariah called her out for her diva moments. According to Page Six, Mariah strongly objected to Meghan's comment about her attitude during their conversation, telling her, "you give us diva moments sometimes, Meghan. Don’t act like [you don’t].”
The 'Suits' star was startled by her response and said, "What kind of diva moments did I give you?" Mariah went on to say that she was talking to Meghan's visuals and not her personality when she called out Meghan for her diva moments.
The podcast features interviews with exceptional women. The description on Spotify says, "It is a podcast where we investigate, dissect, and subvert the labels that try to hold women back." The series kicked off with an interview with retired tennis star Serena Williams.
