'Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness' has been teased as a horror film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with Benedict Cumberbatch returning as the sorceror and Elizabeth Olsen appearing as Scarlet Witch. The film will be helmed by Scott Derrickson, who had filmed the first installment.

The plot details of the second film have been kept carefully under wraps. Recently, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige said that the film will introduce several new characters, including one specific character that Marvel has 'always wanted' to use.

When speaking at the New York Film Academy, Feige discussed the process that goes into choosing which character or characters will appear in a film.

"Sometimes you're choosing (a) title hero, choosing which main character or main team you want to bring to the screen and often times, it's as you're making and developing the movie (asking,) 'Who will come into it?' and 'Who will fit into it?'" he said.

"The next Doctor Strange film, for instance, features some new MCU characters which will be making their debut in that movie," Feige added. "You won't expect or won't guess who it is but we found a cool way to make it work because we want to make a particular type of movie there. And there was a character who we always wanted to do something with who will fit really well there."

'Doctor Strange 2' is also expected to be tied into the 'Loki' series, though it is not confirmed whether Tom Hiddleston's mischievous character would be appearing in the film.

Doctor Strange and Scarlet Witch appeared in the final showdown of 'Avengers Endgame' along with the rest, where they defeated the mad titan Thanos, once and for all. They also attended Tony Stark's (Robert Downey Jr) funeral together.

'Doctor Strange 2' is slated for release on May 7, 2021.
