Even Mark Hamill has no way over covering up this 'Star Wars' plot hole involving R2-D2
When the prequels first came around, there were a lot of surprises that popped up — and not all of them good ones. Some moments appeared to even directly contradict what people knew of the original trilogy. Over the years, however, several plot holes were covered up either in off-screen confirmations by 'Star Wars' creators, or in shows, books, comics, and other extended 'Star Wars' media. However, one point might have been entirely overlooked, and not even Mark Hamill himself has any idea how to explain it away.
The fact that Anakin Skywalker (Jake Matthew Lloyd/Hayden Christensen) created C-3PO (Anthony Daniels) was one of the bigger surprises of the prequel series, as C-3PO never once mentioned that Anakin and Darth Vader were the same people. It was later revealed in 'Revenge of the Sith' that C-3PO's memory was wiped, which is why he remembers nothing. However, this same process was not done to R2-D2 (Kenny Baker), meaning he should have been able to tell Luke Skywalker about his parentage.
Even the fan who pointed this out to Mark Hamill on Twitter was stumped, writing, "My daughter just asked, 'R2-D2 was there for the whole story and never had his memory wiped so why didn’t he just tell Luke that Vader was his father at some point?' I just sat there dumbfounded until she shrugged and walked away." Though he only communicated in beeps, it's been established that Luke Skywalker could talk to him when R2-D2 was plugged into Luke's ship — plus, the droid frequently had C-3PO translate for him. R2-D2 could have communicated with Luke at any time. Mark Hamill responded with this: "I read this tweet, thought long and hard... then just shrugged and walked away. #NoPlausibleAnswer"
Of course, 'Star Wars' fans have been covering up the franchise's many plot holes for years and were quick to supply answers of their own. "R2-D2 never knew that Anakin was Vader. he saw anakin leave his ship on mustafar and never come back. someone said Artoo was anxious when Luke to find left his ship to find Yoda because that's how Anakin left him," responded one fan.
"I think R2-D2 was also on the asteroid of Polis Massa while Luke and Leia were being born and when Anakin was becoming Darth Vader. He didn't witness the physical transformation of Vader. So to R2-D2 Vader was just another bad guy," writes another Twitter user.
Somethings, however, the simplest answers are the best, as this one fan points out, writing, "Maybe the answer is, 'Because nobody asked him/her.'"
Sometimes it's all about asking the right question.
