Turns out Lucifer Morningstar (Tom Ellis) had not only hidden an important truth from Chloe Decker (Laura German) but also Mazikeen (Lesley Ann-Brandt) as well and in episode 4, 'Lucifer' Season 5 we learn what exactly the King of Hell has kept from Maze all these years. We travel back in time under the guise of Lucifer telling Chloe's daughter Trixie a story on game night. In truth, Trixie has been employed by Maze to find out the story behind the ring that Lucifer always wears, with a black stone. Just as expected, Lucifer lets his guard down around the little girls and so he tells her the story behind the ring. Lucifer takes us to 1946, New York, to one of the best performing bars in town where a beautiful singer has captured the hearts of many. She is none other than Maze's mother Lilith who goes by the stage name Lily-Rose.

His friend had called him over to Earth for a drink and when he does meet her, he is tasked with helping a dear friend of his find her prized possession. This is the ring that Lucifer wears. Turns out the ring was originally adorned with a white stone, which we learn is a piece from the Garden of Eden that Lilith had left Heaven with or more accurately, left after being cast out. Initially, Lucifer is hesitant and doesn't want to help Lilith out. It is only after she calls in the favor that he owes her that Lucifer agrees to help her out.

Turns out a rumor about Lilith's ring spread on Earth and speculated that the wearer of the ring would gain immortality. This rumor, when heard by a desperate bartender (portrayed by Linda Martin) who wants to save her ailing husband, becomes a source of hope. So the bartender somehow finds out that Lily-Rose is now the owner of the ring -- from the eternally youthful looks that she has enjoyed -- and so hires a thief to steal the ring and hand it over to her. In reality, the ring is just something that Lilith used to remind her of her life lived in Heaven and how she was cast out. It helps her remain strong and also helps remind her of the reason why she left her children in Lucifer's care.

The favor that Lilith gave to Lucifer in the past was to give her children away to be his army in his rebellion against his father before he was cast out of Heaven to serve as the King of Hell. Maze is one of the children that Lilith abandoned to make them stronger than she ever was. Maze, of course, believes that her mother had abandoned her and since then the trauma that has been inflicted upon her by Eve, and most recently by Lucifer as well have pushed Maze to the edge of the cliff. The only one who really understands the extent of how hurt Maze is, is her best friend Dr Linda Martin (Rachel Harris) followed by Michael, who is the King of Lies, manipulation, and a major fear needler.

We see the past play out as Lucifer with the help of a detective (portrayed by Laura German) solves the mystery behind the missing ring. In the process, Lilith learns the beauty of living life as a human being who knows and understands the repercussions of death. She believes that their lives are lived fully because they know that the end comes no matter what, and so Lilith decides to give up her immortality. She breathes her immortality into the ring, which turns black at that moment and begins to live life as a human. She also asks Lucifer to not tell her children about her decision because she doesn't want them weakened.

Maze hears the entire story from Trixie after and decides to even track her mother down. She arrives at her mother's door hoping to see some form of regret at abandoning her daughter, but when she sees that Lilith has no regret, Maze leaves in a rush. This secret is what alienates Maze from Lucifer.

'Lucifer' Season 5 Part 1 is scheduled to release on August 21 and can be streamed on Netflix.
