All of that aesthetic, steamy, romp aside, one can't quite help but wonder if Ruby 'stepping into the shoes of a White woman' is going to help her at all in Episode 5

One of the most WTF moments on Lovecraft Country's Episode 4, titled 'A History of Violence' was Ruby Baptiste (Wunmi Mosaku) getting entranced by a White man - a man none other than the heir of Samueluby Braithwaite, William (Jordan Patrick Smith). The two met at a bar and immediately hit it off - something that came more as a shock than the discovery of Montrose Freeman's(Michael Kenneth Williams) now outed sexuality thanks to his secret lover, once again, at the bar. Ruby and William hit it off right from the get-go, taking things smoothly and suavely into the bedroom within moments, making love to Marilyn Manon's cover of Jay Hawkins' 'Put a Spell on You'. And all of that aesthetic, steamy, romp aside, once can't quite help but wonder if Ruby 'stepping into the shoes of a white woman' is going to help her at all in Episode 5.

According to the official synopsis given by HBO, Episode 5 titled 'Strange Case' will entail the following: "After making a devil’s bargain with William, Ruby steps into the charmed shoes of a white woman, but her transformation only fortifies her resentment of the racial divide. A betrayal by Montrose unleashes Atticus’ pent up rage, leaving Letitia deeply disturbed and sending Montrose into the comforting arms of his secret lover."

Clearly, like father, like son, so after Montrose's heavy breakdown in 'A History of Violence', Atticus Freeman (Jonathan Majors) gotta snap in the immediately next episode. And that makes sense because his good-for-nothing-father or so he thinks of the progenitor, not only just burned Titus's (Tony Goldwyn) book of magic but also killed their fourth Musketeer in the adventure - Yahima, the two-spirit Arawak, in the most violent manner ever. Tic's eruption has been long-coming and is not going to be pretty at all. That it manages to leave Letitia 'Leti' Lewis (Jurnee Smollett) deeply disturbed after their intense kiss in the episode is enough to testify that. But it isn't the new golden trio's liaisons that should cause worry.

Blissfully unaware that magic let alone the Book of Adam, or even Ardham exists, Ruby decides to drown her sorrows in blues and bottles after finding how deep the roots of racism run in their society. There she meets William and without asking too many questions, drowns her sorrows further in moments of pleasure where she also ignores the satanic markings on his body as they are making love. While William doesn't seem to be taking advantage of Ruby, making the whole thing somewhat less problematic in a Jim Crows era, considering he's a White man having sex with a Black woman to a song sung by a White man, originally created by another Black artist, the symbolism is layered and almost worth a chuckle, but all of that aside, is Ruby really safe?

Episode 5 hints at Ruby finding out the layers of racism further as she steps into the shoes of a White woman, foreseeable through William's association. It is worth noting that being estranged from her sister Leti who is privy to all the magic and monsters from the Braithwaite's world, makes Ruby an invaluable asset to both William and his sister, Christina Braithwaite. Sure, we thought Ruby is smarter than that, considering she is the one always warning Leti of not triggering the Whites around them, but maybe she too has an ulterior motive after all? Here's hoping the Braithwaites don't turn her into another sacrificial expendable the way Samuel tried to do Tic.

'Lovecraft Country' airs on Sundays at 9 pm only on HBO.
