After a string of stirring sports documentaries, of which almost each one of them opened to positive reception from fans, the latest entrant, 'Long Gone Summer' was slammed. And probably, the word "slammed" is an understatement. Social media didn't mince words when they lashed out against Mark McGwire. He may have broken Roger Maris's record, but that didn't earn him many fans today.

"This is the worst 30 for 30 I’ve seen and I love MLB but this is awful," a fan said. "Just call it a Mark McGwire documentary... don’t use Sammy just to get more of an audience if all it’s gonna be about is Mark," another wrote. "This promo for guys who cheated should be about how they cheated. Not glorifying their cheating results," a tweet read. "Watching #30for30 #LongGoneSummer incredible the number of steroids in one show. #steroids #ESPN," a fan remarked.

"He didn’t earn it. Roger Maris is still the single-season HR champ," a fan opined. "This has been dog sh*t to watch," another exclaimed. "Roger Maris is still the Home Run King! 61 in 61!!" a fan tweeted. "He cheated and yall applaud him. SAD," one of the fans wrote. "Oh yeah, I'm sure all the single guys under age 50 are watching the Mark McGwire 30 for 30 instead of the Josie Canseco Bikini Hour," a fan mocked.

Nicknamed Big Mac, McGwire struck a whopping 70 home runs in 1998 when he was turned out of the St Louis Cardinals. He was also one of the key figures in the baseball steroids scandal where he admitted to the use of performance-enhancing drugs. During the 1998 season, according to a story by AP journalist Steve Wilstein, McGwire affirmed he had used androstenedione, a muscle enhancement product that had already been banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency, the NFL, and the IOC; however, use of the OTC substance was not prohibited by Major League Baseball at that period.

"Should of injecting more juice then," a fan tweeted. "Dude had 17in forearms..smh," a fan observed. Needless to say, McGwire and 'Long Gone Summer' didn't win any fans. Or at least not these folks who hated every bit of the documentary.

'Long Gone Summer' is available for streaming on ESPN+.
