For Liam Hemsworth, 'Most Dangerous Game' is a chance to put the personal aside and rocket his Hollywood career

Of the 17 films he's racked up so far in his career, seven of them have touched the 70% ratings in Rotten Tomatoes while the rest fall between the 29% to 56% bracket

Liam Hemsworth's acting career has seen some mileage. From playing a runaway teen in 'Triangle' to the shot-to-fame role of Gale Hawthorne in 'The Hunger Games' installments, the Australian actor has had a roller-coaster ride in the cinema industry.  Year 2019 was a rather quiet one for 'The Independence Day: Resurgence' star as both his projects, 'Isn't It Romantic', a rom-com starring Rebel Wilson, Adam Devine, and Priyanka Chopra, while 'Killerman' had contrasting runs.

While 'Isn't It Romantic' garnered a healthy rating on Rotten Tomatoes, 'Killerman' was a damp squib. However, it wasn't any of these that headlined the younger Hemsworth, but his split from Miley Cyrus. The relationship which began in 2009 was another battle as the couple was on-off for three years before getting engaged in 2012. They married in 2018 December just to split up again in August 2019.

According to HarperBazaar, Cyrus's rep announced the split in a statement that read: "Liam and Miley have agreed to separate at this time. Ever evolving, changing as partners and individuals, they have decided this is what's best while they both focus on themselves and careers. They still remain dedicated parents to all of the animals they share while lovingly taking this time apart. Please respect their process and privacy."

On his part, Hemsworth took to Instagram where he wrote: "Just a quick note to say that Miley and I have recently separated and I wish her nothing but health and happiness going forward. This is a private matter and I have not made, nor will I be making, any comments to any journalists or media outlets. Any reported quotes attributed to me are false. Peace and Love."

Coming back to his career, Hemsworth's TV journey was a rather quiet one too. There were no TV shows he was part of and barring his appearances in 'The Late Late Show With James Corden' and 'The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon', there was nothing much out there. Of the 17 films he's racked up so far in his career, seven of them have touched the 70% ratings in Rotten Tomatoes while the rest fall between the 29% to 56% bracket. If anything, it's a sign for Hemsworth to land a role that could put his Hollywood career back on track.

And with Quibi's 'Most Dangerous Game', the 30-year-old finds an opportunity to do just that. The dystopian action-thriller sees Hemsworth star alongside 'Spectre' star, Christoph Waltz' as he buckles up to play Dodge Tynes, a man diagnosed with cancer. In a bid to provide for his pregnant wife when he's gone, he takes an offer from a mysterious businessman, Miles Seller (Christoph Waltz) to participate in a deadly game where he's hunted by unknown people.

Survival means winning $24.5 million. Enough money for his wife to live a comfortable life. The official synopsis reads, "Desperate to take care of his pregnant wife before a terminal illness can take his life, Dodge Tynes (Liam Hemsworth) accepts an offer to participate in a deadly game where he’s the prey. This dystopian action-thriller explores the limits of how far someone would go to fight for their life and their family. Let the games begin."

In a way, the whole project is a fresh start. Quibi is one of the new mobile streaming services to hit the world with their piecemeal style of content distribution. That they have A-listers as part of their projects is a major reason to grab eyeballs. It's an experiment worth giving the shot.

For Hemsworth, it's another chance to put his acting skills to use. While much of his movies may not have broken BO numbers, his performances garnered positive responses from critics, fans and audiences alike. And much like the world after 'Resurgence', it's a new start for the actor to cement in his name amidst the pantheon of greats.

'Most Dangerous Game' premieres April 6 on Quibi. You can watch the trailer here:
