The novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has resulted in a worldwide shutdown of non-essential services. This has also meant that many television shows and films had halted production early in March when it was clear that social distancing was the only way to control the outbreak.

'Legacies', along with more than 100 shows, halted its production as well. Season 2 was supposed to be 20 episodes long. However, due to the pandemic, this week's Episode 16 of Season 2 will be the last new episode for 'Legacies' for a while.

Showrunner and executive producer Julie Plec tweeted, "#Legacies fans! Tonight, after some herculean efforts by our post-production team (have YOU ever tried mixing an episode from home???), we will air our 'Spring Finale' (aka ep 216). More episodes to come as soon as we all go back to work! But until then, #StayHomeSaveLives."

In this week's episode, though Josie Saltzman was able to save herself from her darkness, the story did end with a disturbing set of cliffhangers. The Necromancer has absorbed Josie's dark magic, Landon Kirby is still dead and Hope Mikaelson has not woken up after her stint in Josie's mind.

Plans for Legacies‘ return will be announced at a later date. Meanwhile, The CW is bumping up the Season 2 premiere of 'In the Dark', which will now air in the 'Legacies‘ time slot — Thursdays at 9/8c, beginning April 16. 'In the Dark' was previously scheduled to return on May 28.

At this point, we don't know yet when it will be safe for the cast and crew to return to filming, which makes it hard to come up with an accurate timeline for when the rest of Season 2 could air. Viewers might have to wait until summer — or possibly even fall — for new episodes and answers to all our burning questions.

'Legacies' joins other CW shows in prematurely ending their current seasons, including 'Supernatural' and the Arrowverse shows. 'Supernatural' co-showrunner Andrew Dabb tweeted earlier this week that the show had filmed through Episode 18 of its fifteenth and final season, but that its "visual effects and sound departments have closed because of the outbreak. So, right now, the episodes can’t be finished".
