Lady Gaga and Blackpink fans have been loving their collaborative track 'Sour Candy' since its release earlier this year, but many eager followers are still wondering whether its official music video will see the light of the day.

The track was released for digital download and streaming on May 28, 2020, as a promotional single off 'Chromatica', Gaga's chart-topping sixth studio album. 'Sour Candy' sees the pop icon and the South Korean girl group teaming up in a dance-pop, electropop, and deep house song with a house, dance and electronic beat, and lyrics that compare the artists to the titular sour candy. The song reached No. 1 in Malaysia and Singapore and the top ten in Australia, Estonia, Greece, Hungary and Lithuania, and debuted at No. 33 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Fans are still salivating over the anticipated music video though, so here's what we know so far.

Release date

No official release date has been confirmed, but we've put together some clues as to its potential arrival. We will update this space as soon as there's a confirmation.

Teasers

Back in June, enthusiastic fans began to notice several hints from sources such as Blackpink's Jennie, Universal Music, and Cantaloupe that the song would indeed receive an official video. The post that initially sparked fans' curiosity was an Instagram Story shared by Jennie after the song's release. The singer wrote, “Lady Gaga and BLACKPINK “Sour Candy” COMING SOON”

Move on to a post shared on the official account of Universal Music Thailand, and fans were suggested to "wait a bit" for a possible new "surprise." According to a screenshot shared by Music Mundial, they wrote, "MV hasn’t been released yet, but wait a little bit. There may be a second round of surprise."

What's more, is that the official YouTube channel for WMTV predicted in July that the 'Stone Sour' visual would premiere during the 2020 MTV Video Music Awards. In the comments section for a fan-made video up on YouTube, WMTV said, "THIS IS NOT THE OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO FOR SOUR CANDY. ITS NOT OUT YET. ONLY OFFICIAL AUDIO RELEASED. THE OFFICIAL VIDEO WILL PREMIERE AT MTV VMAS NEXT MONTH!"

After the song’s release, Blackpink’s Jennie updated by posting a story on her personal Instagram account that says: “Lady Gaga and BLACKPINK “Sour Candy” COMING SOON”. This story immediately sparked the curiosity of fans and generated frenzy on social networks, as it is thought that some music video will be released soon.

Possibly the most crucial clue is that Lady Gaga herself has continued to share posts related to "sour candy" long after the song's release. During the early hours on December 16, Gaga shared a selfie with the caption: "Sour Candy—so sweet then I get a little angry. 🧝‍♀️." As a clever fan on Twitter pointed out, "Just a reminder that before LADY GAGA dropped the 911 Music Video, she keeps using the emoji [police car revolving light] as a hint and now she dropped a hint for a possible SOUR CANDY MV."

Concept

We can't tell you what sort of concept the music video will have presently, but if you haven't heard 'Sour Candy' before, here's a quick explanation of its theme. 'Sour Candy' is an upbeat 1990s-influenced dance-pop, electropop, bubblegum pop and deep house anthem that follows a bouncy house, dance and electronic beat.

In the collaborative track, Gaga and Blackpink are "trading off flirty lines" in English and Korean which use sour candy as a metaphor to "illustrate how they function in a relationship," as described by critics. The song also expresses that they are rough on the outside, but sweet and authentic on the inside. 'Sour Candy' has lyrics aimed at a potential lover to accept the singers' damage while showcasing their sassy mean streak.
