The masked era of Kanye West might return for good as the acclaimed hip-hop artist is now reportedly working on the sequel of his gold-certified 10th album ‘Donda’. This would be the very first time when the Grammy-winning rapper will be working on an album sequel. Kanye, who now legally goes by the name of Ye, had dropped ‘Donda’ on August 29, 2021.

Steven Victor- the COO of G.O.O.D. Music and SVP of A&R at Universal Music Group exclusively shared details to Complex revealing that Kanye West has started working on the sequel to ‘Donda’ dubbing it as a “masterpiece”. While the name of the sequel is being hailed as ‘Donda 2’, nothing official has been revealed yet. The 44-year-old rap icon has not commented on anything, so far, on the same. Kanye West had extensively promoted ‘Donda’ with the help of multiple live streaming events, and new merchandise.

Release date

Kanye West took to his Instagram with more than 10 million followers to announce the release date of his 11th studio effort. ‘Donda 2’ will hit the Internet on February 22, 2022, which also forms a unique and rare formation of 2/22/22.

How to live stream

The sequel to ‘Donda’ will be up for streaming on leading online platforms like Spotify, Tidal, Apple Music, and YouTube respectively. You can enjoy ‘Donda’ until then right here.

Concept

To announce the album’s release date, Kanye posted a picture of a replica of his childhood home in Chicago, set ablaze. A few hours later, he took to his Instagram stories revealing that the release date of ‘Donda 2’ will coincide with the United States’ first-ever Pluto Return. “In astrology, a Pluto Return happens when “a heavenly body” passes all 12 signs and returns to the same sign it was in when it was born or created”, said his Instagram story. Also, Future has been roped in as the executive producer of Kanye’s sequel to ‘Donda’.

Speaking to Complex, Steven Victor, who has closely worked with Kanye West over the years, said, “Ye has started working on his new masterpiece ‘DONDA 2’.” Kanye West’s ‘Donda’ was certified gold in September 2021. ‘Donda’ is also up for Grammys this year as the album scored nominations in the Best Rap Album and Album of the Year categories respectively.

Kanye West had courted controversy after he delayed ‘Donda’ multiple times even after organizing three live streaming events and one private party. Universal Group eventually made the album available everywhere on August 29, 2021. It was apparently done to avert a clash with Kanye’s then arch-nemesis Drake’s sixth album ‘Certified Lover Boy’ aka CLB. The ‘College Dropout’ hitmaker’s album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart with 309,000 total album-equivalent units.

Tracklist

Kanye West has not shared a tracklist for ‘Donda 2’. Steven Victor too refrained from sharing any details on the upcoming songs from Ye. A video of the rapper, however, recently surfaced on Twitter where he was spotted in the studio making new music.

Speaking of ‘Donda’, the album was stacked with whopping 27 tracks and featured some of the top global artists on the guest verses such as The Weeknd, Jay Electronica, The Lox, Young Thug, the late Pop Smoke, Pusha T, Travis Scott, and Lil Baby, among others.

‘Donda was bad. No need for a sequel’, says Twitter

Hip-hop fans, who were seriously pissed with Kanye for delaying ‘Donda’, argued on Twitter that ‘Donda 2’ will have a similar fate. While some said they were eagerly waiting for the album, others claimed Ye might probably scrap the project. “Bro this s**t is gonna be so fire, hope it lives up to jik 2, yeezus 2, good a** job, yandhi, so help me god, love everyone, cruel winter, turbografx16, wolves, thank god for drugs”, said one user as another posted, “It’ll be renamed and delayed like ten times and then we get it.” One posted, “Friendly reminder to not trust any ye music news until the album is physically on your computer.”

The next one tweeted, “Never coming out. Guaranteed”, as another chimed in, “Donda was bad. No need for a sequel.” One individual asserted, “Man I don’t even give asf about this mans music anymore things got so deep it doesn’t even feel like music anymore I can’t support it he needs help.” Whereas, another added, “Yeah this is either a really good idea or a really bad one. More than likely he will sit on it for 4-5 years anyway.” One user concluded, “We need 10 listening parties, 6 release dates, & 17 controversial decisions for Donda 2 rollout please.”
