In the late 1980s, Jennifer Grey from ‘Dirty Dancing’ and Johnny Depp were happily engaged. While the couple did separate after nine months of engagement, it wasn’t a harsh breakup. "You have to realize, Johnny Depp, 1989 Johnny Depp, so lovely…” Grey told Drew Barrymore on her show on Thursday, May 12, 2022. She said that Depp was "so beautiful, it was inhuman”. Moreover, Grey stated that her relationship with Depp helped her in getting over Matthew Broderick back then.

Grey and Depp began dating after meeting through their agent. When Grey first met Depp, she was entranced by his beauty, as she recounted in her memoir 'Out of the Corner'. She claimed that he was "the most beautiful man-boy" she had ever seen, and he "set off an electrical storm" in her head. Grey claimed that Depp "wiped out all my pain." Grey told Barrymore that being engaged to two men in the same month was "really a sign that there was trouble afoot on my part." She added, “I just thought it was God rescuing me from one bad situation and just lovingly plopping me into a Johnny Depp souffle.”

In her new memoir 'Out of the Corner', Grey included an excerpt from a journal she maintained shortly after meeting Depp. “On August 12, I wrote in my journal, ‘I’m in love, pretty sure for the first time in my life … He’s kind, funny, smart, moral, thoughtful, respectful,'” she said. Depp and Grey also had a dog named Lulu. Grey said, "She [the dog] was our practice baby and someone to keep me company while Johnny was away."

However, according to Grey, the relationship was cut short due to Depp's actions .“He’d started missing his flights home to LA having overslept or when he did come home, he’d be crazy jealous and paranoid about what I’d been up to while he was gone,” she wrote. She canceled the engagement with a note she placed in Depp's hotel room one day after he departed for a meeting and failed to return or contact her, according to the book. While his actions aren’t proven to be true, Grey’s statements have caused a stir and now netizens are discussing it.
