'Shelter' drops its first action-packed trailer with Jason Statham entering assassin mode
The beginning of 2026 just got bigger and better. When it comes to action flicks, Jason Statham is certainly the OG! A part of his appeal is the reserved and brooding demeanour that he brings to each of the action films he stars in. The first trailer for the upcoming film 'Shelter', which is set to hit theatres on January 30, 2026, recently dropped. All in all, it seems that the new year will kick off hard and in style!
Collider reported that 'Shelter' is an action-drama film directed by Ric Roman Waugh. Statham would be leading the film as the character of Michael Mason, a reclusive former professional assassin who lives on an obscure island. The trailer does a splendid job of establishing the tone and texture of the movie, in turn prompting audience expectations. The clip begins with Mason in his habitat at a remote coastal island, seemingly on the run from a government organization that is desperate to hunt him down. The prevailing order in Mason's life is disrupted when a little girl approaches him with a hint that he saved his life. However, this soon exposes Mason to those who aim to bring him down, and what follows is a high-octane drama replete with jaw-dropping action.
Waugh has previously made his bones with action cinema, with his 2013 film featuring Dwayne Johnson and the 2019 film 'Angel Has Fallen' starring Gerard Butler. He followed this up with his second collaboration with Butler on 'Greenland'. Parry, on the other hand, was the writer of the Liam Neeson starrer 'Retribution'. Statham himself is looking forward to new releases in the new year. He would be seen as Former Special Forces operative Cole Reed in the upcoming film 'Mutiny'. Another film, 'The Beekeeper 2', is reported by ScreenRant to be in the pipeline. Apart from Statham, the cast of 'Shelter' includes Naomi Ackie, Bill Nighy, Daniel Mays, and Bodhi Rae Breathnach.
Waugh recently shared his thoughts about 'Shelter' in an interview with IGN. While speaking about the crux of the film, Waugh explained, "It's a movie that there were scenes directing it where it's a bit of a tear-jerker about two lost souls trying who find family and don't want to lose it; a man trying to do the right thing by this young girl and dealing with the dark cloud behind them."
The director was all praise for Breathnach, whom he cast at first sight, recollecting, "When we did the chemistry test, she was the first young girl that came in. Jason and I looked afterwards, and we were like, what do we do now? Because we know that's her. The heart of it became about the way that you're looking for Natalie Portman in The Professional (or) Dakota Fanning in Man on Fire. Who's going to bring it?"
