Is Sam Elliott in ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’? Fans think the ‘Landman’ actor just hijacked ‘Star Wars’
The trailer for ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ made its debut during the ‘Super Bowl’, on February 8. And it became one of those spots people rewind not because they loved it, but because they’re trying to figure out if that was really all there was. The footage itself is bare-bones to the point of disbelief, featuring Din Djarin and Grogu riding slowly through a frozen landscape while bundled tauntauns do the heavy lifting. No battles. No villains. Nothing dramatic. Just a chilly trek across terrain that looks suspiciously like Hoth, the icy planet burned into ‘Star Wars’ memory thanks to ‘The Empire Strikes Back’.
For a franchise known for spectacle, the visual side of this preview feels oddly undercooked. And yet. There’s one thing about the trailer that people cannot stop talking about, and it has nothing to do with what’s actually on screen. It’s the voice. The narration floats over the images in a gravelly tone, musing about roads taken, bonds formed, and journeys that don’t always go where you expect. It sounds familiar. Comforting in a dusty, boots-on-the-porch kind of way. Almost immediately, viewers began asking the same question: Is that Sam Elliott? Officially, no one has confirmed anything.
Sam Elliott and Tauntauns. Brilliant marketing for The Mandalorian and Grogu. https://t.co/SqHgxBzJs3

Lucasfilm hasn’t attached a name to the voiceover, and the credits don’t offer any clues. Still, fans are convinced. To many ears, it sounds exactly like Elliott, a performer whose voice alone carries decades of Western grit and authority. If it really is him, the choice would make a strange kind of sense. ‘The Mandalorian’ has always leaned into frontier vibes more than any other ‘Star Wars’ project. That dusty tone has been part of the show’s appeal from the beginning, and Elliott has built an entire career representing that exact energy. While he’s never been boxed into one genre, Westerns have followed him like a shadow.
From modern hits like ‘Landman’, and ‘The Ranch’ to TV fare like ‘1883’, and all the way back to cult favorites such as ‘Tombstone’, Elliott has played the kind of characters who speak less and mean more. He’s also no stranger to genre storytelling beyond cowboy hats and spurs. Elliott has appeared in big fantasy and superhero projects before, including Ang Lee’s ‘Hulk’, and ‘The Golden Compass’. He even wandered into comic-book territory with ‘Ghost Rider’, as per SlashFilm. Put all that together, and the idea of Elliott joining ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ doesn’t feel random.
Of course, there’s another possibility. The trailer itself is styled like a playful riff on classic Budweiser Super Bowl commercials. This could simply be a clever parody, borrowing that tone without actually involving the actor at all. A soundalike. If that’s the case, Elliott may have absolutely nothing to do with the movie beyond inspiring the vibe of a 60-second ad. And honestly? That might explain why the footage itself feels so thin. Also, according to Comic Book Club, ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ arrives in theaters on May 22.
