‘The Pitt’ Season 2 Episode 13 Ending Explained: Is Robby leaving? Emotional collapse mid-shift casts doubt
'The Pitt' Season 2 Episode 13 chronicles the first hour of the night shift as patients continue to pour in at the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center. The episode, titled '7:00 P.M.' sees Dr. Jack Abbot arrive for his shift with a host of other staff members, who are updated about the patients by Dana. Thankfully, the computers are also back up, but that leaves the staff to update their charts for the past five hours. With two episodes (and hours) away from the season finale, Robby continues to spiral emotionally, worrying about the state of affairs in the ER.
Ellis Parker appears in this episode after being promoted to series regular for Season 3. Samira Mohan reaches her breaking point and keeps snapping at her peers, signaling that she is tapped out. Orlando, the construction worker, returned to the ED in Episode 12 with a head injury. Robby insists Javadi stick around and assist the Division Chief, Dr. Linda, with Orlando's case, despite her shift ending. However, his prognosis is grim. His wife, Mrs. Diaz, is told that her husband will need long-term medical care in a nursing home, adding to the family's financial burden. Robby later confides in Dana that Orlando probably attempted suicide due to his financial debt, but Mrs. Diaz overhears them.
Santos informs Dr. Crus about Jesse being arrested by ICE, and Robby finally learns that Jesse is held in a detention facility two hours away. Episode 13 gives us some background on Digby or 'Pitt Jesus,' a frequent visitor to the ED. While talking about giving him a haircut, Dana learns that he has a daughter, who lives in his house while he has been homeless. A young boy named Grady and his mother, Naomi, come to the ER after losing their Medicaid. Grady complains of wheezing and has a collapsed lung. Naomi explains that he couldn't take all his medicine, as one Symbicort inhaler costs $400.
Al-Hashimi zones out again while attending to a patient, prompting Robby to ask about her past as a VA doctor in Afghanistan. Samira mentions another incident with Baby Jane Doe where Al-Hashimi froze, hinting at signs of trauma-related disassociation. Noah Wyle's wife, Sara Wyle, guest-stars as the patient, Mrs. Ashley Davis, who is cared for by McKay and the new intern, Nesley. Davis' skin appears extremely yellow, but she dismisses it as bronzing cream. But results reveal that she has liver inflammation caused by consuming large amounts of Turmeric.
Santos and Whitaker share a bonding moment after she slips on the floor and drops all the files. As the duo sits and talks about Whitaker moving out of her apartment to shift into Robby's place once he takes off on his sabbatical. Whitaker has another shining moment in this episode after Austin Greene, Ogilvie's patient, dies during surgery. He apparently didn’t disclose all his medical information and was supposed to get checked every six months. His death hits Ogilvie hard, and he starts to think he may be better suited to primary or peds. Whitaker talks him through the loss and send his home to recover.
Duke finally gets his CT done, after a long wait, but Robby is heartbroken to learn that his friend is basically a ticking time bomb and has no less than a week to get help. Dana confronts Robby about his anger towards Samira and McKay, and it is then that Robby opens up about what's been bothering him. He tells Dana that he's worried about how his staff and patients will cope with the stress and chaos in his absence. He is concerned about whether Langdon will relapse, whether Samira and Javadi will give up, and how Al-Hashimi can manage the ER.
