‘Marshals’ preview teases devastating turn for Kayce Dutton and the day for vengeance is ‘still young’
A new first look at ‘Marshals’ has arrived, and it wastes no time making one thing clear: the calm ending Kayce earned on ‘Yellowstone’ didn’t stick. Luke Grimes is back as the youngest Dutton. But the man viewers meet in this spinoff is carrying a different weight than the one who sold the family ranch and dreamed about starting fresh with Monica and Tate. The trailer, released January 23, opens on images that feel intentionally uncomfortable. Kayce wakes up alone. The bed is empty on the other side. There’s silence where the family once lived. Then comes a visit to a grave, a moment that says far more than any speech could.
Whatever happened between the end of ‘Yellowstone’ and the beginning of ‘Marshals’, it clearly left damage behind. In ‘Yellowstone’ finale, Kayce walked away alive, married, and hopeful. He chose peace. Or at least he tried to. Now, peace appears to be off the table. One absence in particular has fans paying attention. Kelsey Asbille, who played Monica, is nowhere to be found in the announced cast list. Also, the trailer offers no answers, only questions. The footage suggests a loss, but stops short of spelling out what, or who, is gone. The silence around Monica is loud. Very loud.
What the trailer does confirm is that Kayce has thrown himself back into action, this time wearing a different badge. Instead of protecting ranch borders, he’s now part of an elite U.S. Marshals unit, operating across Montana. At one point, Kayce reflects on everything he’s lost, saying “Yellowstone is gone, same for most of my family. As for vengeance, the day is still young.” It’s not a threat exactly. More like a promise he’s making to himself. The series brings back familiar faces from ‘Yellowstone’, including Gil Birmingham as Thomas Rainwater and Mo Brings Plenty returning as Mo. New characters fill out the ‘Marshals’ team.
Logan Marshall-Green plays Pete Calvin, while Arielle Kebbel appears as Belle Skinner. Ash Santos steps in as Andrea Cruz, and Tatanka Means joins as Miles Kittle. Together, they form a group tasked with keeping order across wide-open spaces. Luke Grimes has been open about initially questioning whether Kayce even needed another chapter. After all, his ‘Yellowstone’ ending felt earned. According to Grimes, “He has his dream life now, so now what does he do? I think we left him in a perfect place. And then the new showrunner, Spencer [Hudnut], called and he had an idea that was very, very good.”
He continued, “And that was it. I was like, ‘Ok, that makes sense. And that opens up a whole new world for him and we get to see him be a different Kayce than we’ve ever seen,’” as quoted by The Hollywood Reporter. Originally announced under the title ‘Y: Marshals’, the project has since been streamlined to simply ‘Marshals’. The premiere date is already set. As per TVGuide, ‘Marshals’ arrives Sunday, March 1, at 8 p.m. on CBS, with streaming available on Paramount+.
