LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Apple TV+ is turning out to be a sweet haven for the fans of sci-fi genre. The OTT giant boasts the most intriguing lineup of mind-bending science-fiction series.

In 2024, it continues to expand its offerings in the demanding genre. In February this year, Noomi Rapace and Jonathan Banks starrer 'Constellation' made its debut on Apple TV+.

Based on the concept of multiverse, 'Constellation' revolves around a female cosmonaut who is separated from her family when she lands in a different reality.

Shortly after the show concluded in March, Apple TV+ released 'Dark Matter', a science fiction series created by Blake Crouch, based on his 2016 novel of the same name.

Much like 'Constellation,' the Joel Edgerton starrer 'Dark Matter' also builds its foundation on the concept of the Observer effect from quantum physics.

Both series share similar plots where the protagonist is trapped in another reality and faces challenges in reuniting with their family. Both  shows explore the concept of multiverse travel

Yet, 'Dark Matter' comes out as a far better series than 'Constellation. Let's discuss how:

1. Superior world building

Despite sharing the same plot, 'Constellation' presents a world that feels underdeveloped. It starts on an interesting note, taking viewers to Jo Ericsson's adventures in space and her miraculous return.

Along the way, the show loses its charm. In an attempt to woo the audience with a mind-bending thrill, the series overdoes it. The lingering confusion makes the audience disconnect from Jo Ericsson's world.

Meanwhile, Blake Crouch has developed Jason Dessen's world with intricate details in both realities. Fans don't have to wait for long to know about Jason's background and how he built his life up until the present moment.

There's a high level of resonance with Jason from both realities, and this is what sets it apart from 'Constellation'.

2. Stronger Character Development

Another major standout aspect of 'Dark Matter' is its exceptional character development. While steeped in scientific concepts, Blake Crouch's series dives deep into the backgrounds and motivations of its main characters, making viewers genuinely invested in their journeys.

Each episode reveals new layers to the characters, creating a rich and engaging narrative that keeps viewers hooked.

In contrast, 'Constellation' struggles with shallow character arcs, often leaving the audience disconnected from the story's emotional core.

3. Better Pacing and Structure

'Dark Matter' benefits from well-paced episodes that balance suspense, emotions, and character development effectively.

The show maintains a steady rhythm, ensuring that each episode contributes meaningfully to the overall narrative.

'Constellation,' however, struggles with pacing issues, with some episodes feeling dragged, disrupting the flow of the story.

4. Stronger Performances in 'Dark Matter'

Despite everything done to perfection, 'Dark Matter' could have faltered if the casting hadn't been spot-on.

Joel Edgerton carries the show on his shoulders, bringing authenticity to the complexity of his character. He manages to portray Jason as a man, divided into two separate people following a choice he made 15 years ago.

While Jason 1 exudes kindness and compassion, Jason 2 is a complex individual entangled in his own emotions, striving to undo the consequences of his past decisions.

His chemistry with Alice Braga and Jennifer Connelly further elevates the show, making it more engaging and interesting.

Noomi Rapace and Jonathan Banks in 'Constellation' too delivered a great performance but unfortunately, they were let down by the screenplay.

5. Depth to the narrative

'Constellation' relies solely on its science fiction concept, failing to provide any depth or emotional resonance towards the character or the narrative.

Meanwhile, 'Dark Matter' dives into the morality and perspective of each character. The series asks tough questions like -Are you happy with your life and would you like to change it?

Set against hostile environments, 'Dark Matter' skillfully balances its tough dilemmas with the deep human connections at its core. The result is a gripping narrative that intertwines moral complexity with heartfelt storytelling.
