'The Rookie' Episode 5 preview signals a major character's return in Season 8 amid a critical new case
Get ready to welcome back a fan-favorite character in 'The Rookie' Season 8. The Episode 5 preview teases the return of a key figure two years after their departure. Created by Alexi Hawley, the series' fourth episode showed Bailey Nune (Jenna Dewan) and John Nolan (Nathan Fillion) discussing a job offer, with the couple divided over the decision. Nolan strongly opposed the move, while Bailey admitted she doesn't want to let the opportunity slip away. As their future hung in the balance, the Episode 5 preview teased the return of a beloved character, making the wait for the next episode harder than expected.
In the fifth episode of 'The Rookie' Season 8, titled 'The Network', Lieutenant Wade Grey (Richard T. Jones) will team up with an FBI task force that seeks Aaron Thorsen's (Tru Valentino) help to bring down a major criminal operation. At the same time, John Nolan (Nathan Fillion), Miles Penn (Deric Augustine), Lucy Chen (Melissa O’Neil), and Celina Juarez (Lisseth Chavez) will investigate a separate shooting that could be connected to the larger case. The preview also highlights Thorsen's return to the spotlight, recalling his journey from his introduction in Season 4 to becoming a series regular before his departure in Season 6 following a traumatic shooting and a tense fallout with LAPD psychiatrist Dr. Blair London (Danielle Campbell), as per ScreenRant.
The preview shows the FBI recruiting Thorsen to help catch a heroin trafficker who was once his prison roommate during his wrongful incarceration, forcing him to confront a traumatic past that may now be key to dismantling the criminal network. Talking about comebacks, Seth Ridley (Patrick Keleher) also made a comeback in Season 8. Ridley is a former rookie whose web of lies ended in redemption when he saved Nolan by taking a bullet, resulting in the loss of his lower leg, as per Deadline. Ridley's first appearance since the Season 7 incident comes during a tense check-up visit from Penn, where the meeting quickly turns sour. Things escalated after Penn opened with the awkward line, "I think we started off on the wrong foot."
Ridley vented his frustration by saying, "It is not fair. I came clean to everyone; I've confessed every lie, every sin. Nobody has forgiven me for anything that I've done," prompting Penn to reply, "What you did hurt people who care about you. It will take a lot more than an apology to fix that" before Ridley angrily threw him out. Penn and Ridley reconciled later in the episode when the latter admitted, "You're right, man, the self-pity has got to stop; I want to do better," and asked for help. Penn agreed on the condition of "radical honesty," sealing it with a handshake.
