If you love ‘The Marvelous Mrs Maisel’ and crime dramas, Rachel Brosnahan’s ‘I'm Your Woman’ is your best bet! The film revolves around a suburban housewife Jean who lives a seemingly easy life, supported by husband Eddie’s (Bill Heck) career as a thief. But when Eddie betrays his partners, Jean and her baby are forced to go on the run, and Eddie’s old friend Cal (Arinzé Kene) is tasked with keeping them safe.

After Cal mysteriously disappears, Jean befriends his wife Teri (Marsha Stephanie Blake) and the two women set out on a perilous journey into the heart of Eddie’s criminal underworld. A decidedly female take on crime dramas of the 1970s, ‘I'm Your Woman’ is a tale of love, betrayal, motherhood — and what it takes to claim your life as your own.

The neo-noir crime drama first had its world premiere at AFI Fest on October 15, 2020. AFI Festivals director Michael Lumpkin said, “Now more than ever it is important for film festivals to create a platform for audiences to discover great films, and ‘I’m Your Woman’ is cinematic storytelling at its best,” adding, “With a captivating and complex narrative of a woman on the run, director and writer Julia Hart takes us on an unexpected journey that speaks directly to the current state of our world and the real meaning of friendship, love and family.”

Talking about the movie, Julia Hart said, “I love those movies in spite of the fact that none of the protagonists represent me.” She added, “The stars are all men, mostly white men. And then you have all these formidable actresses playing very small roles: Diane Keaton, Tuesday Weld, Teresa Wright, Ali MacGraw, and then when the action gets going, they get kicked out of the movie because the men don’t think they can handle it. The moment the door closes in Diane Keaton’s face in ‘The Godfather’. The moment Tuesday Weld gets in the car in ‘Thief’. Sure it’s cool to watch the man go take care of business, but I just always found myself wanting to follow the woman. Where is she going? What’s going to happen to her? And since I never got to see that in those movies, I just decided to make that movie myself.”

Release date

Rachel Brosnahan’s crime drama ‘I'm Your Woman’ opened at the AFI Fest during its 34th edition on October 15-22. It was released in a limited release on December 4, 2020, followed by Prime Video on December 11, 2020, by Amazon Studios.

Plot

Bill Heck and Rachel Brosnahan (Amazon Studios)

When her husband Eddie goes on the run, suburban housewife Jean (Rachel Brosnahan) is left behind with an infant, a bag of cash and instructions to go wherever Eddie’s associate Cal (Arinzé Kene) takes her. Whisked away to a nondescript safe house, Jean waits for her husband to return for her with only the baby and a sympathetic neighbor (Marceline Hugot) for company. But when Eddie’s assailants track her down and a deadly gunfight ensues, she finds herself on the run again.

Cal takes Jean and the baby to a remote cabin where they are joined by Cal’s wife Teri (Marsha Stephanie Blake), his father (Frankie Faison) and Cal and Teri’s young son Paul (Da’Mauri Parks). Confused, terrified and cut off from anything familiar, Jean learns shocking secrets about her missing husband. When Cal also mysteriously disappears, Jean and Teri set out on a perilous journey into the heart of Eddie’s criminal underworld on a desperate quest to protect their loved ones.

A decidedly female take on the classic crime dramas of the 1970s, filled with impeccable period detail, ‘I'm Your Woman’ tells the story of one woman’s struggle to survive in a dangerous new world.
