Netflix has been a treasure trove of true crime documentaries and the streaming service still has more up its sleeve. Its latest offering was spun off from the original, 'I Am a Killer', the British crime documentary series, which follows the investigation procedure of murderers who await death sentences.

In 'I Am a Killer: Released', viewers will follow the story of one man -- Dale Wayne Sigler -- who was convicted of murder and handed a death sentence. However, fate intervened, and today, Sigler is a free man. Read on to know more details about the series.

Release date

The three episodes of 'I Am a Killer: Released' will be available to stream on Netflix on August 28 from 12 am PST.

Plot

Thirty years ago, Dale Wayne Sigler was sentenced to death for murder -- a cold-blooded crime he freely admitted to committing. Now, having spent more than half his life behind bars, he's off death row and about to be released back into the world. 'I Am A Killer: Released' follows the killer's first steps to freedom, where he is placed into the custody of Carol, a 70-year-old prison pen pal he barely knows. The series was shot on location in Texas and produced over a three-year period. As Sigler begins to adjust on the outside, he addresses the life he took as well as the one he lost and reveals his true motive for committing the brutal crime, which is shockingly different to the reason the world always believed.

Cast

Dale Wayne Sigler

In 1990, Dale Wayne Sigler robbed a Subway sandwich shop at gunpoint. When the shop assistant, John William Zeltner Jr, fled to the backroom in fear, Sigler shot him six times, killing him. Then he took $400 from the till. After a tipoff to the police, Sigler confessed to the crime. In 1991, he was sentenced to death.

In 1993, Texas changed its laws regarding jury selection. Sigler’s team argued successfully that this invalidated his sentence, which was changed to life imprisonment. He would be eligible for parole in 30 years.

Producers/Director

The documentary is executive produced by Danny Tipping, Ned Parker, and Natalka Znak and directed by Itamar Klasmer, who directed episodes of Netflix’s 'Sunderland ‘Til I Die' series.
