Contains spoilers for 'How I Met Your Father' Episode 3

What makes 'How I Met Your Father' a light watch is the time period it is set in and how relatable it is. Although it does exaggerate certain trends, it centers on what key things shape a person's life. Long-distance relationships for instance are hard, and while it is a known fact, what makes it tick is compromise and faith —something that Sid (Suraj Sharma) and his fiancee Hannah (Ashley Reyes) learn as they try to acclimatize to their long-distance love story.

The fun bit is the chemistry between Sophie (Hilary Duff) and Jesse (Chris Lowell) with the latter trying to get back on the dating circuit. What he needs is a perfect profile picture that sees Sophie help her bud (we're still rooting for them to be a couple) by clicking one picture that'll set his Tinder profile on fire. Unsurprisingly, the photoshoot doesn't go as well as expected, and although he does manage to make headway with a girl at a bar, it turns out the pretty lady knew about his proposal rejection and was just using him to get some extra attention.

'How I Met Your Father' Review: Not too funny, but Hilary Duff's dramedy has heart

While that comes as a bummer, Charlie (Tim Ainsley) and Ellen (Tien Tran) have some tough troubles themselves as they look for roommates. Although they initially reject the idea of bonding well as roommates, circumstances lead them to realize that a bit of compromise would go a long way in not just getting along as roommates, but also being good friends while at it. Sophie does get a potential date offer from Drew (Josh Peck) and while we do know that they date in Season 1, he is not introduced as the father.

'HIMYF' continues in a light vein and surprisingly the comedy element is scrubbed off a little. This works when it comes to mild humor to explain sensitive topics like long-distance relationships. What is interesting is how Sophie's backstory will play a key role in future episodes. It was already revealed that her parents didn't have a great marriage despite them being college sweethearts. And for someone looking for love earnestly, how her relationship with Drew pans out remains to be seen.

'How I Met Your Father' drops a new episode on Hulu every Tuesday.
