'Pluribus' Season 2 gets disappointing release update from series creator

While a second season is greenlit, it appears to be a minute before fans get to watch it

'Pluribus' Season 2 isn't coming anytime soon. Or atleast that's what's implied from creator Vince Gilligan's response when talking about the release of the new season. The Apple TV series debuted at the end of last year and was a massive hit with fans. While a second season is greenlit, it appears to be a minute before fans get to watch it on the streamer.

Speaking at Apple TV's 2026 press day earlier this week, Gilligan said his team was "plugging away" at the second instalment. "All the folks, if you like the show, thank you for getting us here on this stage," he said. "It takes a long time to come up with these episodes. We are deeper into the process at this moment than I would like, considering how few episodes we have figured out. But it takes some time, just as it did in the first season."

The sci-fi series follows novelist Carol Sturka (Rhea Seehorn) as she looks to fend off an alien virus that eerily turns humanity into a peaceful hive mind. "We appreciate everybody’s patience," he further added. "But it ain’t gonna be The Pitt, coming back every year. I wish it would be because it’s an awesome show that’s old-school, like we used to do The X-Files [when] we’d come back the same month every year. It will not be like The Pitt. We’ll come back the same month – just the question is what year."

Gilligan's comments come on the back of his take on season 2 earlier. "You get a good number of answers at the end of season 1," he told RadioTimes. "There's a character that we all love, all of us in the writers' room, everybody on the set loves, played by an outstanding Colombian actor named Carlos-Manuel Vesga. You'll only meet him glancingly throughout the season, but you'll get to know him a little better by the time the season or the series, I guess, as you say in the UK, is done."

The first season premiered in November last year. This would mean the earliest fans can expect the second season is around next year, or perhaps the start of 2028. The delay in writing and directing is understandable, considering the massive expectations on the show after its impressive debut. Per Rotten Tomatoes, the critical consensus reads, "Genuinely original science-fiction fare from television veteran Vince Gilligan, Pluribus leads Rhea Seehorn through a brave new world with plentiful returns."
