TORONTO, CANADA: Kenneth Mitchell, acclaimed for his roles in 'Star Trek: Discovery and Captain Marvel,' died at the age of 49 due to complications arising from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Mitchell succumbed to ALS complications on Saturday in Los Angeles, as announced by his family in an Instagram post. “With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Kenneth Alexander Mitchell, beloved father, husband, brother, uncle, son and dear friend to many,” the statement said.

“For five and a half years, Ken faced a series of awful challenges from ALS. And in truest Ken fashion, he managed to rise above each one with grace and commitment to living a full and joyous life in each moment,” it added. “He lived by the principles that each day is a gift and that we never walk alone. His life is a shining example of how full one can be when you live with love, compassion, humor, inclusion, and community,” it continued.
Kenny was the keeper of countless enduring friendships,” his family shared. “Like a massive star exploding with kindness, pureness, and a particular brand of silly, you were pulled right into his orbit. Once captured, Kenny could bathe you in positivity, compassion, thoughtfulness, and hilarity, and make you feel so loved.”
Mitchell gained recognition for his portrayal of Eric Green in CBS' Jericho. In the realm of film, he played Joseph Danvers in the 2019 movie Captain Marvel, taking on the role of Carol Danvers' (Brie Larson) father in a flashback featuring the young Carol (McKenna Grace). Early in his career, Mitchell also portrayed Ralph Cox in the 2004 sports biopic Miracle. His extensive television credits include 'The Astronaut Wives Club,' 'Switched at Birth,' and guest appearances on shows like 'Code Black,' 'CSI: Cyber,' and 'NCIS,' among others.

In 2020, Mitchell openly disclosed his diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), commonly referred to as Lou Gehrig's disease. "The moment that they told us it was [ALS], it was like I was in my own movie,” Mitchell told PEOPLE. “That’s what it felt like, like I was watching that scene where someone is being told that they have a terminal illness. It was just a complete disbelief, a shock.”
Mitchell is now survived by his wife Susan May Pratt and their two children.
