The intrigue factor has climbed a notch higher as 'Homeland' inches closer to its end. The Claire Danes-starrer has been Showtime's hit political thriller since 2011, and in its eighth and final season, it's leaving no stone unturned in giving the audience its boldest season yet.

The previous episode, 'F****r Shot Me' gave us a look at Haissam Haqqani's (Numan Acar) fate after he surrenders to the US hoping to get a fair trial after being accused of killing two presidents. Abdul G'ulom (Mohammad Bakri), who's out for his head, seems to be the only man content as Haqqani is handed over to the Afghan government. Meanwhile, Carrie Mathison (Danes) and Saul Berenson (Mandy Patinkin) have their own missions, both of which could have some serious political ramifications if they went haywire.

Carrie sets out to rescue Max Piotrowski (Maury Sterling) with the help of Yevgeny Gromov (Costa Ronin), her Russian handler, making her a fugitive. Elsewhere, Saul and Tasneem Qureishi (Nimrat Kaur) figure a way to stall Haqqani's trial in a bid to borrow time to prove he's not guilty.

The promo of the upcoming episode, 'Threnody(s)' sees Haqqani about to be executed while Carrie attempts to track down the Black Box retrieved by Max after it crashes, killing the two presidents. Max's fate is also revealed as he's whisked off by the Taliban while Saul promises that he's being monitored and that Carrie needs to come in.

The official synopsis reads: "Carrie decides to wait patiently to see what comes for her next; Wellington (Linus Roache) makes a surprising discovery." Going by the synopsis, it is pretty evident that Carrie is not backing out in her attempt to rescue Max. With the promo shedding light about her lead on the Black Box, we can assume that Yevgeny might have had a hand in helping her figure out where it could be. The Wellington storyline may have something to do with the arrival of Hugh Dancy's John Zabel, the president's foreign policy advisor.

At this stage, there are still enough questions that need to be answered. Will Max and Haqqani be alive and kicking by the end of the series? Will Carrie end up as a fugitive on the run? And what of G'ulom? Theories by fans are that he has authorized the death of the presidents. Only time will tell how it ends for Carrie and Saul.

'Homeland' Season 8 airs Sundays 9 pm ET on Showtime.
