The appearance coincided with reports that Halyna Hutchins' Ukrainian relatives had launched a civil complaint against Alec in Los Angeles on February 9, seeking damages for Hutchins' death after the fatal shooting on the 'Rust' set in 2021. A fresh case against Baldwin was filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court on behalf of Hutchins' parents and younger sister, who works as a nurse on the outskirts of Kyiv, the capital city of Ukraine, and is wed to a Ukrainian soldier serving in the battle against Russia, as reported by Daily Mail.

The new lawsuit alleges negligence and the deprivation of benefits based on prior emotional or monetary help Hutchins gave to parents Olga Solovey and Anatolii Androsovych as well as younger sister Svetlana Zemko.  It is also aimed at providing 'accountability and justice' for Hutchins as well as for her family. Several 'Rust' cast members, a supplier of ammunition, the movie's producers, and other companies are all named as defendants in the lawsuit. In a separate case, weapons supervisor Hannah Gutierrez-Reed and Baldwin are accused of felony involuntary manslaughter. A remote first appearance is scheduled for later this month.

Baldwin has promised to fight charges against him

In October 2021 at a ranch used as a set for the movie 'Rust', Hutchins was wounded during a rehearsal and died shortly after. Director Joel Souza was injured, and Hutchins was killed, when Baldwin's gun, which was aimed at Hutchins, accidentally discharged.

While an assistant director has agreed to admit guilt to less serious charges, Baldwin and Gutierrez-Reed have vowed to fight the allegations. In addition to legal fees, the complaint asks for an undetermined amount in compensation and punitive damages. Late last year, Rust producers Baldwin and others came to an undisclosed settlement with widower Matthew Hutchins. As part of the deal, Matthew is required to serve as a producer on 'Rust' when it possibly begins production.

Baldwin has filed lawsuits against those who handled and supplied the loaded rifle in an effort to clear his name. Baldwin, who is also a 'Rust' co-producer, claimed he was informed the pistol was secure. Baldwin said in his lawsuit that as he and Hutchins were adjusting camera angles, he pointed the gun in her direction, drew back, and released the weapon's hammer, causing it to discharge.
