David Bromstad's education and career

David was born in August 1973 in Cokato, Minnesota. From an early age, David was fascinated by Walt Disney, which prompted him to enroll himself at Ringling College of Art and Design. He picked the animation elective with the explicit goal of joining Disney. But soon after his classes began, David realized that he didn't enjoy animation as much, and was more into drawings.

In an interview with South Florida Gay News, David shared, "That’s why I went to art school. I wanted to be a Disney animator. I was obsessed with anything Disney. Obsessed. Shortly after I was in art school I took an animation elective and just realized that it just wasn’t for me. It was very tedious. I was really getting into painting and I was really good at it. I liked to draw and couldn’t imagine myself sitting at a desk for 10 hours and drawing the same figure that moved barely an inch."

David's dreams came true when he landed a job as a visual merchandiser at Disney. After juggling through various departments in the giant corporation, he was suddenly laid off. During this difficult time, David took up doing various odd jobs to make some money. He told the outlet, "I was doing whatever I could to make money. All I knew is I needed to do art. I was doing paintings for hotels. I was working basically for other interior designers. I was fabricating props for kids' rooms for homes around the southeast. That’s what I was doing. Anything I could. Anything that was creative. Anything that was Artistic." "I was always challenging myself. Always doing my work above and beyond what I needed to do. I knew I needed to take a great picture for my portfolio. I knew it would come in handy someday and it did come in handy. It got me on to design star and therefore it changed my life," he explained.

Despite being a very artistic person, David never thought about a career in interior designing until he signed up for HGTV's 'Design Star'. "When I went on Design Star, reality shows were just getting started. It wasn’t very good for people at that time. I was like Oh My Gosh what am I doing? I just said “Lets just go for it, I have nothing to lose.” Obviously I had tons to gain," he shared.

Thankfully, his decision to join the HGTV show worked out in his favor, as he went on to win the competition and pocket the $250,000 grand prize! Instead of blowing his winnings on some frivolous things, David used it to invest in setting up his own interior design business. Fans loved watching David on the show, which led to him bagging his own HGTV show. Since his 'Design Star' days back in 2006, David has gone on to appear in several other HGTV shows such as 'Beach Flip', 'Design at Your Door', Rock the Block', 'Brother vs. Brother', etc, during his 15-year stint on the network.

David commented about his HGTV success, I went from being a starving artist to being this thing I am right now. It’s been really exciting. I have my own television shows. It’s really cool. It kind of feels like a dream. It’s a pretty cool gig and I’m here to stay."

David Bromstad's Net Worth

According to various reports David earns a whopping $500,000 a year hosting 'My Lottery Dream Home', he also reportedly earns an additional $30,000 from his several other tv show appearances. While Celebrity Net Worth estimated his net worth to be around $2 Million, several other outlets estimated David's net worth to be within the range of $500,000.

Aside from being a very successful HGTV host, David also has several other side projects that act as his other income sources. Back in 2015, David tied up with luggage company Kipling to release a line of "a spot-on vintage-inspired collection of travel pieces". Style Caster reported David's inspiration behind the collaboration. "I was sitting waiting for my luggage—of course it was black—and the stress of [locating it] was too much. I sent an email to my agent right then and said let’s contact Kipling. They’re all about color and pattern and fabulousness.”

He also has his own design firm in Miami called David Bromstad Designs, which provides several consultations and interior design services to their clients across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Customers can also shop for custom art and furniture designed by David from his other business venture David Bromstad Studio! Looks like getting laid off by Disney actually worked in David's favor.
