'Grey's Anatomy' Season 16 Episode 13 Review: An elderly couple's romance makes this a heartwarming watch

This storyline was sweet and a pleasant callback to the golden days of the show

Putting it bluntly, 'Grey's Anatomy' has been a bit of a drag lately.

The Maggie-Jackson (Kelly McCreary and Jesse Williams) dynamic was stale, the prolonged Owen-Amelia-Link baby drama and Catherine Fox (Debbie Allen) turning into somewhat of a Cruella De Vil was just painful to watch. Apart from that, Alex Karev (Justin Chambers) vanishing out of our lives forever was the final nail in the coffin.

Yet, this episode titled 'Save The Last Dance For Me' had its merits. For starters, there was an old couple's romance (George Gerdes and Shannon Wilcox) that was rather heartening to watch.

A man realizes his wife cannot be saved from cancer and decides to ask her for a romantic dance, a reminder of their salad days. The patients' stories were once the heart and soul of 'Grey's Anatomy', along with the interpersonal relationships. This storyline was sweet and a pleasant callback to the golden days of the show. This dance prompts Levi to make an important decision regarding his relationship with Nico.

Andrew DeLuca is still struggling to find out the problem with his patient Sussanne and has consulted an expert diagnostics (Shoshannah Stern) for help. She might be deaf, but as she says, her body listens to everything and every sense is heightened. She knows her stuff and her small emotional speech to Sussanne's sister at the end of the episode did provide for some feels.

Of course, the baby drama onslaught is still going on in full force, as Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) decides that she will not take the paternity test. She leaves Link (Chris Carmack) a curt text message that she "needs time".

Why, why why can't this character ever find peace? Someone should tell the Grey's writers that the Owen-Amelia love story was the most tangled and complicated story arc of the show, and digging it up again is just irritating. You try to feel invested in the small Owen-Amelia moment, but you are too done with their story and drama by now. Will they get together? Is the father of Amelia's baby Owen? You really don't care.

It is becoming somewhat of a refrain for every review lately but when will they properly address the missing Karev elephant in the room? Apparently, he is in "Iowa, dealing with family troubles", and being iffy with Jo (Camilla Luddington).

How much longer can the writers prolong his absence? For all you know, keeping to Grey's tradition, Jo and Alex might just break up without much explanation. (Please don't do that, please).

Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) realizes that she is more focussed on her work and isn't too het up about her romance. At the beginning of the episode, we do see her canoodling with Andrew again, but that's where it ends. Meredith feels that she is above all the drama now. We are with you Mer.

Bailey, Owen and Meredith blackmail Tom Koracick into making a sound decision about Richard's fate as a doctor. This was fun but a little overdone.

All said and done, this was actually one of the better episodes 'Grey's Anatomy' has come out with lately.

'Grey's Anatomy' airs on ABC on Thursdays at 9pm.
