Kirk Frankin bagged the award for Best Gospel Performance for his song 'Love Theory'. The singer (and songwriter for the song) said he felt honored and said, "Gospel music has so many incredible talents and I am so humbled to be in that category with some of the greatest to ever do it."

He expressed his gratitude towards many artists he has worked with. He also thanked "Jesus the King, because it is all about Him". Franklin closed his acceptance speech by "Sending prayers to Kobe Bryant and his family", in reference to the death of US basketball superstar Kobe Bryant that took place on January 26. Franklin also received the Grammy for Best Gospel Album for 'Long Live Love', his twelfth studio album.

The Grammy Award for Best Gospel Performance/Song category at the annual Grammy Awards was first awarded in 2015. It combines two previously separate categories in the Gospel/Contemporary Christian Music field, Best Gospel Song (for songwriters) and Best Gospel/Contemporary Christian Music Performance (for performers).

The current category recognizes both songwriters and performers, including solo, duos, groups and collaborations, and is open for singles or tracks only. The songwriters are only awarded a Grammy Award if it is a newly-written song. Grammys for cover versions of previously recorded songs are awarded to the performers only.

The nominees included:

'Talkin' 'Bout Jesus' - Gloria Gaynor Featuring Yolanda Adams

'Bryan Fowler', Gloria Gaynor & Chris Stevens, songwriters

'See the Light' - Travis Greene Featuring Jekalyn Carr

'Speak the Name' - Koryn Hawthorne Featuring Natalie Grant

'This Is A Move (Live)' - Tasha Cobbs Leonard, Tony Brown, Brandon Lake, Tasha Cobbs Leonard & Nate Moore, songwriters
