'Good Trouble Holiday Special': Dennis and Davia's emotional celebration in 'Nochebuena' is what Christmas is made of
This article contains spoilers for 'Good Trouble Holiday Special: Nochebuena'.
'Good Trouble' has returned for the festive season with its own signature style Holiday Special. And while Marina is braving a Christmas celebration disaster at the last moment amidst Jude's little secret and Jamie's big plans, it is somehow Dennis and Davia's slow-burning emotional turned hilarious Christmas day events that make the first half of the special a classic 'good trouble' affair.
Titled 'Nochebuena', the episode shows Dennis and Davia reconciling after he had accused her of 'suffocating' him with her overbearing presence through the period of him grieving the loss of his son. Davia reaches out to him for the 200 cookies she is supposed to bake for Mariana's Christmas celebration, and as she drags him out of his room - where he has been cooped up for the last two months - it's obvious that even though he is nowhere close to the spirit of Christmas, there's something about the way Davia storms into his life that he can't evade.
Dennis might sound unwelcoming but he clearly doesn't mean it, as is obvious by the way he agrees to cave into Davia's need for help and even takes her to the old house where he used to live with his family. The two begin baking the cookie and soon we learn Dennis is an expert in the cookie-cutter department. as he guides her through the process of how to not make the dough stick to the pan, the two begin a flour fight that ends with a lot of fun and cheer - the classic Christmas cheesy affair.
Things, however, get a little too heavy and emotional when Davia comes across Dennis' son's old room in the now empty house that has been cleaned for new owners. She looks empathetic and apologetic both, but there's something about the way she always knows what Dennis needs to hear that makes their bond so special. The two engage in a heart to heart conversation where Dennis talks about leaving town for a bit until the festive cheer dies down, and Davia expresses her concern for him just shutting everyone out once again, and as she points out, isolation is the last thing he needs right now.
But before Dennis can assure her of being around, the new owners decide to take a quick trip to the house. Clearly Dennis and Davia can't reveal themselves, so they do the most convenient thing and hide in his son's closet. But the ridiculous incident doesn't stop there as the young new owners have the sudden urge to make a baby when they come across the child's room. And they give right into that absurd craving and start having sex in the kid's bedroom while Dennis and Davia are still hiding in the closet. Luckily, the couple has a change of mind when the woman says she wants to have her first orgasm in their would-be bedroom, giving Dennis and Davia the chance to sneak out quietly as the owners busy themselves in 'Christening' the house. The funniest part of all of this? Davia makes it a point to scoop all the 200 cookies into boxes before they can sneak out!
This entire coming around for the Christmas spirit on Dennis' half is better expressed in words by Callie's mother, Steph, later in the second half of the special, titled 'A Very Coterie Christmas'. Steph tells Davia in private, it's possible that the reason why Dennis hasn't sought professional help for his issues is because he has Davia around. And while that's a lot of responsibility to take for Davia, she clearly doesn't mind being the crutch Dennis needs to wade through a traumatic life event like this.
'Good Trouble Holiday Special' aired on Monday, December 16, at 9 pm only on Freeform.
