LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: 'Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga' is gearing up for its release on May 23, 2024. Directed by George Miller, the film explores the origin story of Furiosa (Anya Taylor-Joy) before she encounters and teams up with Max.

The film comes almost a decade after the release of 'Max Max: Fury Road' and sees a young Furiosa being snatched away from her home and taken by a biker horde whose leader is a warlord named Dementus (Chris Hemsworth). As Dementus and Immortan Joe (Lachy Hulme) go up against each other, Furiosa must find a way to survive and find her way back home.

The 'Mad Max' universe is based in a post-apocalyptic world and follows the events in the life of a drifter named Max. In this film though, Furiosa is the protagonist. The film will reveal her backstory and might reveal the details about how she lost her hand.

Before we flock to the theatres and enjoy George Miller's ambitious film, here is a ranking of the other films in the Mad Max universe.

1. 'Mad Max: Fury Road' (2015)

'Mad Max: Fury Road' was released 30 years after the initial trilogy featuring Mel Gibson as Max. The ambitious film is a clear winner as the best film in the 'Mad Max' universe.

Director Geroge Miller used technological advancements and visual effects to create a big-scale spectacle with great storytelling and action sequences that were never seen before.

The role of Max was played by Tom Hardy who gave a spirited performance as the drifter. It featured Charlize Theron as Imperator Furiosa.

2. 'Mad Max' (1979)

Second on our list is 'Mad Max' which came out in 1979 and featured a dapper-looking Mel Gibson as Max. This was the first time the audience got to see the world created by George Miller.

The film deserves credit for setting the ball rolling for the franchise and it kickstarted the universe in a way that it is still going strong four decades later.

An interesting fact about the film is that actor, Hugh Keays-Byrne who played Toecutter in this film went on to play Immortan Joe in 'Mad Max: Fury Road' years later

3. 'Mad Max 2' aka 'The Road Warrior' (1981)

We rank 'Mad Max 2' aka 'The Road Warrior' as number 3 in our list. This is the sequel to 'Mad Max' and begins with an explanation of the events that happened before the first film.

The film once again sees Mel Gibson reprise the role of Max as he discovers humanity and helps a community of settlers defend themselves against bandits.

This film came out in 1981 and it is an important film from the standpoint of developing Max's character as a tough man who is hardened by grief and always up for a good fight.

'Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome' (1985)

The final film featuring Mel Gibson as Max also featured Tina Turner in the role of Aunty Entity. 'Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome' revolves around Max staying in Bartertown which is ruled by Aunty Entity in a post-apocalyptic world.

An interesting fact about the film is that it almost didn't happen after George Miller lost interest in this film as his friend and film producer Byron Kennedy died in a helicopter crash.

This was the last film of the universe for three decades until 'Mad Max: Fury Road' came out in 2015 and re-ignited the franchise.
