Oscars 2024: Fans express disbelief, label 'Oppenheimer' falling short of winning 'Best Sound' 'biggest upset'

Christopher Nolan clinched his first Oscar for directing 'Oppenheimer'

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: The internet expressed its disappointment when Christopher Nolan's 'Oppenheimer,' which led the Oscars 2024 with 13 nominations, fell short of winning the Best Sound category.

Instead, 'The Zone of Interest' secured the Oscar for Best Sound, leaving many disappointed fans who had anticipated Christopher Nolan's 'Oppenheimer,' starring Cillian Murphy, to take home the award.

"We need to thank the Academy for listening to our film," said sound engineer Tarn Willers, accepting the award for the movie with Johnnie Burn. The feature won the Oscar for International Film earlier in the evening.

However, the internet was disheartened as 'Oppenheimer' missed out on the Best Sound category at the Oscars, leaving many fans disappointed and questioning the award outcomes.

A fan on X wrote, "Damn Oppenheimer missing out on best sound? Biggest upset imo so far, the sound in that film was IMPECCABLE." 

"This year's #Oscars is one of the few years in a long time I'm generally happy with the outcome regarding the awards. There were two decisions I didn't like. #Oppenheimer should've won best Sound and #LilyGladstone should've won for Best Actress," said another disappointed fan.

Some believed that the film starring Cillian Murphy was snubbed at the Academy Awards. A fan posted, "Honestly a v good Oscars aside from Oppenheimer getting snubbed for Best Sound Design. Absolutely criminal."

"Oppenheimer not winning Best Sound for the Oscars is kinda crazy IMO," added another fan. "For real though, how did #Oppenheimer not win Best Sound? This is an outrage," wrote another. 

Christopher Nolans bags his first Oscars with 'Oppenheimer' 

Christopher Nolan, widely recognized as the frontrunner, secured his first Oscar on Sunday night for directing 'Oppenheimer.' Adding to his triumph, he also clinched another prestigious award for the best picture category.

“To the Academy — movies are just a little bit over 100 years old,” Nolan said during his first acceptance speech of the night. “We don't know where this incredible journey is going from here. But to know that you think I'm a meaningful part of it means the world to me," he added.

How many Oscars did 'The Zone of Interest' get? 

'The Zone of Interest,' a German-language Holocaust drama directed by Jonathan Glazer and featuring Christian Friedel and Sandra Hüller, made history by winning the United Kingdom's first-ever Academy Award for Best International Feature at the Oscars 2024.

The film delves into questions of complicity, offering a portrayal of the ordinary lives of a Nazi family residing near the Auschwitz death camp.

The film draws inspiration from Martin Amis' 2014 novel and features German actors Christian Friedel and Sandra Hüller in the roles of Nazi commandant Rudolf Höss and his wife Hedwig.

It follows their efforts to establish an ideal life for their family in a residence adjacent to the notorious death camp.
