Spoilers ahead for ‘Extraction 2’

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: There’s a lot to love when it comes to Chris Hemsworth’s latest movie ‘Extraction 2’ which is the brainchild of none other than Sam Hargrave. After the first ‘Extraction’ movie in 2020, viewers couldn’t wait to see what was next in store for Tyler Rake after he almost died. Of course, ‘Extraction 2’ highlights Rake’s recovery and mini-retirement that doesn’t last too long. Are we even surprised?

There are several moving elements in ‘Extraction 2’ but one cryptic character in particular stood out — the one played by Idris Elba. Frankly, he is mysterious enough that he doesn’t even have a name in ‘Extraction 2’ but of course, that leaves room for the creator to build on this character in the future of this franchise. Nevertheless, Elba is the one who gets Rake out of retirement and then disappears for the rest of the movie… until the very end.

Rake is presented with an impossible choice

Toward the end of ‘Extraction 2’, we see Rake and a battered Nik Khan in prison after the final showdown between Zurab and Rake. As Rake ruthlessly murders Zurab and Nik suffers an almost fatal injury, they are taken away by the authorities. However, will Rake and Nik really end up rotting in prison? Because if they do, that will call for ‘Extraction 3’ to become a prison-break movie, and fans might have seen enough of that already in ‘Extraction 2.’

Rake is ushered into a fancy car surrounded by other cars, which immediately screams that there is something big in play. Of course, Idris Elba returns for the end of ‘Extraction 2’ as there is some playful banter between him and Rake, essentially to lighten up the mood after the gruesome 115 minutes of ‘Extraction 2’ that have gone by.

Elba’s character gives Rake a very interesting choice that involves either skipping out on his prison term and working for a new boss or continuing to rot in jail. Of course, Rake’s first concern is his team, which only includes Nik at this point, and as another car rolls up, Nik emerges too.

Now, Rake can either stay in prison or continue his badass, action-packed adventures. Only this time he'd be working for a scary and powerful figure in the world of mercenaries — scary enough to be called a 'gnarly motherf**ker' by Elba's character who seems to be his subordinate. If you are a fan of ‘Extraction 2’ and are dying to see another installment in this franchise, then let’s all hope Rake and Nik get out of prison and get back to work!

‘Extraction 2’ almost has an open ending, but at the same time, Rake’s nature gives away the fact that he would rather continue to work, even if that means almost dying all over again than rot in some prison cell for the rest of his life. Hargrave has strategically left plenty of room to come up with several new elements and characters should ‘Extraction 3’ happen, while also welcoming Elba to the coveted franchise.

You can stream ‘Extraction 2’ exclusively on Netflix from June 16, 2023.
