'Encore' Episode 6: Emotionally fractured castmates put up a soulful performance in one of the most beautiful musicals ever
A group of theatre mates from Brookwood High School came together for the sixth episode of Kristen Bell-produced 'Encore' to restage a classic American musical 'Oklahoma.'
Even though they were all pumped up to revisit days of the past, most of them were emotionally fractured and carrying baggage, which sort of came out in the open as they explored themselves in a new way while rehearsing for the musical.
For any musical to play out seamlessly, the cast members have to be comfortable in each other's company. And these middle-aged individuals were catching up after over two decades.
To help them ease a bit, the director and choreographers ensured that they hung out with each other for a bit, auditioned for their roles, and got to re-introduce themselves to each other.
While at it, Brad, a massage therapist, confessed that he was heartbroken when Laura broke up with her. He had begun to choke even before Laura could finish saying that they weren't working out.
Later, they had a good laugh about how Laura's mom discouraged her from breaking up with Brad just before the show because she thought he might bail.
Rusty was coming from a place where he had buried all his dreams and ambitions (to become this great actor in New York City) only to take up a job as an accountant.
Woody, who used to be an excellent dancer at school, met with an accident seven years ago and had his spine injured real bad, following which he knew he wouldn't walk again.
Interestingly, he will be dancing while seated in his wheelchair. Talk about grit! Woody has seen a tough life and yet, he is ready to immerse himself in the little joys of life, which explains why he is so excited about the musical.
Kim, a Spanish teacher, was finding it particularly difficult to adapt to the musical situation because everything about Brookwood high was reminding her of the old times when she didn't want people to look at her.
In her confessionals, she said it was hard for her to not forget the times when she was invisible and yet found a spot in the musical because when she went up on stage no one could see her from all the blinding lights and it was comforting for her.
It was great to see the castmates come together to perform one beautiful musical. Clearly, they know how to live in the moment and appreciate the little joys of life. This will easily go down as one of the best episodes of 'Encore'.
