Emmys 2024: Why outcry over trans actress Nava Mau's 'Baby Reindeer' nomination is absurd
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Nava Mau has made history at Emmy as she becomes the first Latina transgender person ever nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress.
She portrayed Teri, the love interest of protagonist Donny Dunn (played by Richard Gadd), in Netflix's critically acclaimed series 'Baby Reindeer'.Her performance was flawless and organic, offering an honest representation of a Trans woman.
Her nominations has irked many, with some questioning how a trans woman gets a place in a category traditionally reserved for "women". But this isn't the first time a trans woman has been nominated at Emmy.
Nava Mau isn't the first trans woman to get recognition at Emmy
In 2021, Michaela Jaé Rodriguez made history as she became the first transgender woman to earn an Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her performance in the third and final season of 'Pose'. And what more? She even won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Television Series Drama.
Recognition of the marginalized communities, including the transgender community, has been long due in the entertainment industry.
While the filmmakers often try to integrate a LGBTQ+ love story at the first chance they get, those actually belonging to the community don't get enough spotlight and recognition.
The backlash against Mau’s nomination is nothing but absurd and regressive. If the prestigious awards have failed to build a gender inclusive category, doesn't mean the trans actors won't get any recognition at all.
Mau's nominations comes on the basis of her talent and contribution to the Netflix series. The criticism on her nomination isn't only disrespectful for her community but also her talent and art.
Admirers of true talent celebrate Nava Mau's nomination at Emmy 2024
Her nomination is a moment of celebration among the Trans community and the admirers of art.
A fan took to Reddit and wrote, "Love how some people are bothered by a transwoman getting recognition for her excellence. She will be booked and blessed, at the Emmys having a fab time while some of you continue to froth at your mouths with bigotry"
After learning about Mau's nomination, another fan praised her in a comment that reads, "So happy for Nava, she definitely shined the most in the show!"
"She did a very good job of getting her characters' struggle across, I genuinely felt for her, and even days later I was thinking about things she said regarding struggles for the trans community. It was a very real and organic form of representation, and they absolutely deserve a ton of praise," reads another comment.
A Reddit user pointed out, "Hollywood can’t decide if they wanna virtue signal by calling everyone “actors,” no matter gender, or they want to virtue signal by giving best actress noms to trans women. Maybe the categories should be, “best portrayal of a man/woman,” and Hollywood can finally start gender-blind casting."
