LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Netflix is slowly building its name for classic adaptations but over the years, their adaptations of manga have often been criticized. ‘Death Note’, a Japanese manga series, was adapted by the US streaming giant back in 2017. The fans were excited to see a live-action film of their favorite manga, but a poor execution led to the failure of the film and a missed opportunity to rake in more viewers from Japan. Now, every manga fan seems scared of live adaptations but Eiichiro Oda, a mangaka and creator of one of the most popular Manga series, ‘One Piece’, has a promise that should settle some nerves.

Oda has reached out to fans via social media and assured them that he is working on the live-action adaptation of his revered manga series and will not allow it to stream on Netflix until he is truly satisfied with the final product. Given the string of poor adaptations in the past, it is wise of Oda to keep creative control in his hands so that the other executives can’t ruin the series which has a following that can’t be seconded.

What is ‘One Piece’ about?

‘One Piece’ is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Eiichiro Oda. The first edition came out in 1997 and over the years has received praise for its immaculate storytelling, world-building, art, and humor. In 2022, ‘One Piece’ set the Guinness World Record for the most copies published in the same comic book series by a single author. The manga follows the adventure of Monkey D Luffy and his pirate crew as they embark on a journey to find the greatest treasure left by a legendary pirate named Gold Roger. The name of that treasure is ‘One Piece'.

Luffy wants to be the king of pirates and believes that if he finds the treasure, he will surely become one. But he has to set sail on a ship with his crew, fight the evil he meets at sea and outwit rivals at every turn. Matt Owens and Steven Maeda serve as writers, executive producers, and showrunners. ‘One Piece’ is created in partnership with Shueisha and produced by Tomorrow Studios and Netflix.

What did Eiichiro Oda say?

Oda was adamant about one thing in his message which he broadcasted on social media platforms. He will not release all eight episodes of the live-action adaptation until he is satisfied, and Netflix agrees with it. Oda mentioned that he had been working diligently on the live-action adaptation since 2016 and given his life span, this will be his last chance to bring the show alive on screen for the ardent fans.

Netflix was supposed to release the show in 2023 but given Oda’s vision, the timeline has been pushed. You can read the full message by Eiichiro Oda below and witness the burning passion behind his words to air his magnum opus without any faults.
