Early life

Born on March 25, 1977, in Venezuela, Edgar Ramirez was raised alongside his sister Nataly by his father Filiberto Ramirez, a military officer, and his mother Soday Arellano, an attorney. Ramirez traveled a lot during his childhood due to the nature of his father’s job and learned a lot of languages such as English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish. He attended the Andres Bello Catholic University and graduated in 1999 with a degree in mass communication. However, he pursued international relations.

While in college, he started working as an emerging journalist and began reporting on politics. After completing college, he went on to become the executive director of Dale al Voto, a Venezuelan foundation. He and his team didn’t leave any stone unturned to report hard-hitting news and created campaigns for television, movie theatres, and radio. In an interview with Flaunt Magazine, Ramirez noted that politics has always been perfect for him because it gives him an environment to know how humans actually behave.

“There’s a secret dance between actors and characters. I do believe that politics is a great context to explore human nature. When you are in a decision-making position, then we’ll see. Politics for me is the perfect environment to test the extensions and contradictions of human nature,” Ramirez said.

However, Ramirez was always attracted to the performing arts. So, he didn’t take long to pursue acting as a career.

Acting career and the big breakthrough

Ramirez started working as an actor in 2003 and made his feature film debut with ‘Yotama se va volando’. However, his TV debut made him a star, and his impeccable acting skills in ‘Cosita Rica’ were praised by one and all. The actor went on to play supporting roles in several Venezuelan movies and had his first ever major Hollywood role in the 2007 movie ‘The Bourne Ultimatum’. Ramirez played an assassin in the movie and that part turned out to be a life-changing one because he continued to get good parts in high-end Hollywood ventures.

In 2008, he starred in the political action thriller titled ‘Vantage Point’ alongside Dennis Quaid, William Hurt, Forest Whittaker, Matthew Fox, Zoe Saldana, and Sigourney Weaver. The movie went on to become a gigantic hit at the box office and received positive reviews from critics as well.

He garnered worldwide recognition and was awarded Cesar Award for Most Promising Actor at the Cesar Awards in 2011.

Meanwhile, in 2018, Ramirez took the world by storm with an extraordinary portrayal of Gianni Versace in the FX true crime series ‘The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story’. The show went on to become a global success and Ramirez’s acting was praised across the globe. He was nominated for a Golden Globe, and a Primetime Emmy for his portrayal.

Since then, Ramirez has appeared in several high-end productions such as ‘Wrath of the Titans’, ‘Zero Dark Thirty’, ‘The Counselor’, ‘Point Break’, ‘The Girl of the Train’, ‘Gold’, ‘Bright’, ‘Yes Day’, ‘Jungle Cruise’, ‘The Undoing’, ‘The 355’ and more.

Charities

Ramirez has been supporting a lot of campaigns over his career. He supports a campaign named “No Dispares” (Don’t Shoot), by Amnesty International, the human rights organization. The campaign's purpose is to eliminate the number of injuries and deaths caused by the irresponsible use of guns.

Another organization he supports is “5 Senses in Action”, an organization that supports children with special needs. Meanwhile, in 2010, the actor was named a Goodwill Ambassador of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

In 2016, Ramirez gave a soul-stirring speech at the UN Women's Summit and told the world how gender inequality is a massive issue for boys and men too. He said, “Men are taught that if we are not the ultimate provider we are a complete failure. We have to be number one in everything we do. There is nothing more delusional or paralyzing than what I have just described.”

The entire room stood up and applauded Ramirez for such an extraordinary speech.

Achievements

The actor received Cesar Award for Most Promising Actor for the movie ‘Carlos the Jackal’ and his popularity went to a whole new level. Additionally, he was nominated for a Golden Globe, Primetime Emmy, and Screen Actors Guild award for ‘Carlos the Jackal’.

On the other hand, he received nominations at the Golden Globes and Emmys for ‘The Assassination of Gianni Versace’.
