'Wasp Network': Meet the star-studded cast of the spy thriller set to premiere on Netflix
'Wasp Network' is all set to premiere on Netflix this Friday. One of the highlights of the film is the stellar cast the filmmakers have roped in. Based on Fernando Morais' book, 'The Last Soldiers on the Cold War', the film follows the lives of Cuban spies in American territory in the '90s. The spy story might not be a 'GoldenEye', but it is a riveting tale of five intelligence officials who infiltrated the US. Ahead of the film's release, here's a look at the decorated cast.
Edgar Ramirez as René González
Ramirez will be seen on Netflix for the second time within two months. He played Graham Bricke in 'The Last Days of American Crime' and is now back as René González, the Cuban pilot who leaves his wife Olga (Penelope Cruz) and daughter and defects to the US. The Emmy-nominated Venezuelan actor is remembered for his roles in 'Bourne Ultimatum' were he played Paz, a CIA assassin and for playing Gianni Versace in 'The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story' on FX in 2018.
Penelope Cruz as Olga González
While much of her character details are kept closely under wraps, it is speculated Cruz plays an integral role in 'Wasp Network'. The trailer footage sees her find out the truth about her husband dubbed as a "traitor" by the authorities. Cruz also starred alongside Ramirez in 'The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story.'
Gael García Bernal as Gerardo Hernandez
Bernal was one of the intelligence officers parts of the Cuban Five. His other works include, 'The Motorcycle Diaries', 'Coco' and 'Mozart in the Jungle'.
Ana de Armas as Ana Margarita Martinez
Armas plays Ana, the wife of Juan Pablo Roque (played by Wagner Moura), one of the intelligence officers of the Cuban Five. The 'Knives Out' star was cast in 'Knock Knock' — the 2015 mystery drama alongside Keanu Reeves, and it is safe to say that the film opened the door of opportunities for her. She followed it up with 'War Dogs', played Ryan Gosling's AI hologram girlfriend in 'Blade Runner 2049', and a nurse in the critically-acclaimed 'Knives Out'. Add to this a string of Spanish films, and Armas has quite an impressive resume.
The summary, according to Metacritic, reads: "René González (Edgar Ramírez) is a Cuban pilot who leaves his wife (Penelope Cruz) and young daughter behind in the communist island nation to defect to the United States and begin a new life of freedom in the early 1990s. But René is not the upstart American striver he appears to be."
"Joining forces with a group of Cuban exiles in South Florida known as the Wasp Network — led by undercover operative Manuel Viramontez aka. Gerardo Hernandez (Gaël García Bernal) — he becomes part of a pro-Castro spy ring tasked with observing and infiltrating Cuban-American terror groups intent upon attacking the socialist republic."
'Wasp Network' premieres on June 19 on Netflix.
