Dua Lipa's 'New Rules' reaches 12M likes on YouTube and fans call it 'one of the best videos of the decade'
Dua Lipa fans will be happy to know that their favorite pop star is getting some much-needed traction on YouTube. 'New Rules' has reached 12 million likes on YouTube, making it the sixth most liked video by a lead female act on the streaming platform, according to Pop Crave's Twitter account.
Fans reacted with much support for the English singer-songwriter and have already deemed 'New Rules' a "classic." "One of the best videos of the decade, I'm glad this blew up," said one fan while another wrote, "Omg her best song." Apart from many calling her "queen", one fan called her "princess of pop." One fan said, "A cultural reset." Another said, "A BOP WELL DESERVED DUA <3."
The hit song, written and produced by Ian Kirkpatrick with additional writing from Caroline Ailin and Emily Warren, is off Dua Lipa's eponymously-named debut studio album which released in 2017. 'New Rules' received wide critical acclaim, often being labeled as a female empowerment and break-up anthem. The song reached No. 1 in the UK, Netherlands, Belgium (specifically Flanders), Ireland, Israel and Romania.
It also peaked within the top ten in Australia, Canada, Finland, Germany, Italy, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden and more. The track became the Lipa's first top 10 on the US Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number six. Currently at two billion views, the official Henry Scholfield-directed music video, sees the singer staying in a hotel room with her friends, who prevent her from getting back together with her former boyfriend with sonic tones of tropical house, EDM and electropop.
The video gained the attention of many music critics, who commended its themes of female empowerment. The visual was nominated for Song of the Year and Best Choreography at the 2018 MTV Video Music Awards.In the lyrics, the singer states a list of rules to get over a former boyfriend, including, "One: Don't pick up the phone, you know he's only calling 'cause he's drunk and alone. Two: Don't let him in, you'll have to kick him out again. Three: Don't be his friend, you know you're going to wake up in his bed in the morning."
Lipa revealed in an interview with NPR that "They're not necessarily rules I've been able to stick by. But [they're] rules that I feel like it's important to be able to tell yourself, to tell your friends..." She added, "There's a reason people break up, and it's probably the same reason why you shouldn't get back together."
