Great news for the well-wishers of 11-year-old Drake fan Sofia Sanchez, who was diagnosed with a condition called cardiomyopathy. Sofia, who was in urgent requirement of a new heart, has received her heart transplant and according to her doctor Dr. Carl Backer, she is “recovering nicely.”
Dr Backer, who treats Sofia at the Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago, revealed on Tuesday evening that his young patient got a heart transplant on Monday. “I just saw her about five minutes ago and she’s doing quite well,” the hospital’s surgical director of heart transplant patients, told the Chicago Sun Times. “She still has a breathing tube inserted, but that will be taken out in the next few hours.”
Sofia has had a relatively shorter waiting period of eight weeks to find her match. “Sofia has a blood type that was favorable for receiving organs from a bigger pool of donors,” Backer said. He is expecting her to be discharged from the hospital in “three to four weeks.”
Receiving a new heart was one of Sophia’s two birthday wishes this year, the other being meeting her favorite rapper – Drake. She had even taken up the hugely popular Kiki challenge – the video of which has gone viral -, ending it with a request: “I love your music and I was hoping that you could come and cheer me up for my birthday or anytime this week.”
Both her birthday wishes came true, with Drake dropping by Sofia’s hospital bed before his Chicago tour stop with Migos. “Me and my love Sofia talking about Bieber and Owls and Basketball,” he captioned a photo with her that he shared on Instagram.
