For Karen and Deon Derrico, raising their children to be independent individuals is something they both prioritize. The Derrico children are intelligent and articulate, and the credit certainly goes to their parents for raising them that way.

While the family made their way to South Carolina, Karen hoped that her kids would be able to spend more time with her side of the family and their maternal grandmother, who they affectionately call "matu".

But the trip isn't all fun and game as both Karen and Deon are there for business purposes as well. As mentioned earlier, Karen and Deon are hoping to open a family recreational center to accommodate big families such as theirs. Seeing that they plan on opening it in South Carolina, they have been scouting for locations. One such spot that seems to have grabbed their attention is Atlantic Beach, which has a deep history in the Black community.

To teach their children more about their heritage, Deon and Karen took them to Atlantic Beach and explained its significance. They spoke about segregation and how Atlantic Beach became a symbol of power as some of the biggest names in music performed there. Karen mentioned that it was not easy talking about segregation and separation to her children, but it was a meaningful conversation to have in light of all that's happening.

Karen and Deon also told the kids that they would be joining them when they went to the city council, seeing that ultimately, the kids were the demographic for the recreational center. Deon explained that his vision for the 'Derrico Pavillion' was to create a sense of acceptance and equality. For him, when people enter the place, they should feel like they belong and are really and truly accepted. Karen also echoed the same sentiment and was hopeful that they could pull together this plan, as it would bring her closer to home and give her a chance to build something for her family.

Season 3 of 'Doubling Down With the Derricos' airs on Tuesdays at 10 pm ET, on TLC.
