'Captain Marvel' gave the Skrulls their much-anticipated debut in the MCU. Since then, there have been rumors about Marvel Studios has been planning a storyline based on the epic comic book event 'Secret Invasion'. However, recent reports suggest a series might indeed be in development for Disney+  the events of which will tie into 'Captain Marvel 2'.

'Secret Invasion' came out in 2008. The issue by Brian Michael Bendis and Leinil Francis Yu follows the plotline where Skrulls had begun replacing the heroes. They had managed to infiltrate Earth not through the government, but through the Avengers and they nearly pull off successful world domination.

This development was reported by journalist Daniel Richtman, according to CBR. "I hear the reports are true and there really is a kind of Secret Invasion related show in development for Disney+ that will lead straight into 'Captain Marvel 2' which I told you a while ago would likely be Secret Invasion," Richtman said. "I think the show would likely focus on the SWORD and the Invasion from the side of the Skrulls and Kree and 'Captain Marvel 2' from the side of the heroes."

While the Skrulls have been an integral part in 'Captain Marvel' and 'Spider-Man: Far From Home', the mention of SWORD garners interest. It is revealed in the post-credits scene that Nick Fury (Samuel L Jackson) and Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) were in fact not Fury and Hill at all, rather they were the Skrull characters, a race of aliens with the ability to shapeshift. Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) and Soren (Sharon Blynn), the couple from 'Captain Marvel' impersonated the duo. We also find out that the real Fury is in space in an alien spaceship with the Skrulls.

SWORD (Sentient World Observation and Response Department) is a counter-terrorism and intelligence agency that deals with extraterrestrial threats to world security, and is a subdivision of the better-known SHIELD (Strategic Hazard Intervention Espionage Logistics Directorate), but appears to be largely autonomous of its parent organization. Since Fury's departure as director of SHIELD, relations between the two organizations have become strained.

If MCU is more focused on taking a cosmic action route in Phase 4, it makes sense to bring in SWORD. While 'Far from Home' didn't openly establish SWORD, all signs point to the organization given that Fury has been already monitoring developments post 'Endgame'.
