With South Korea having a long way to go when it comes to women’s rights, a majority of male Knetizens are seen making misogynist remarks and comparing feminism to misandry. In fact, a group of male Knetizens had demanded that Olympic champion An San return her gold medal because she had short hair to hate on men. Meanwhile, the new president-elect won the South Korean election with anti-feminist campaigns. And so there is always an inkling that male K-pop idols may also have similar views which is why Winwin’s latest comment has WayV fans disappointed but not surprised.

On July 6, Winwin appeared on the Chinese talk show ‘The Flavour Rings a Bell’. In response to a guest who was talking about how couples fight, the WayV star shared a book he had read. He says that according to the book, “Boys and girls fight because men are logical...girls talk about feelings, you’ll find that girls often talk about it.” A female guest interrupts, “To settle old scores, right?” Winwin goes on with his previous statement, “That’s not what we are talking about, why did you turn over to old scores?” Immediately all the male guests told him to stop as he was approaching a dangerous territory while the female guests just stared at him making Winwin stop.

Winwin talks about a book on couple fights

A female guest asks, “Why do you want to read this type of book?” to which Winwin explained, “The old scores...my sister recommended to me.” The clip then cuts off. This short video started making the rounds on Twitter as non-fans dragged the Chinese-born idol for his supposed misogynist remark. Some WayV fans were disappointed, while others tried to give Winwin the benefit of the doubt by sharing that maybe he was just explaining the premise of a book that his sister had recommended. But the majority of the reactions were negative.

One user tweeted, “Winwin when it was finally his time to perpetuate misogynistic stereotypes abt women.” A fan shared, “Winwin why u gotta be like this bro….. we literally cant have S**T in weishenville.”

Another said, “With this winwin situation happening i hope KPOP stan twitter knows half of these idols think the same way but don’t be open about it.” One user commented, “What's getting me is i've never once heard winwin speak with this much passion about anything before.” A fan added, “WINWIN NO NOT WHEN WAYV ARE ALREADY DOWN LIKE THIS.”

‘Misogyny was just taken out of context’

However, with the episode being an hour-long, fans went and watched the whole thing to understand the context. The whole episode was about why couples fought, what they fought on and how they resolved it. Like the other guests, Winwin seemed to be recommending a book that also spoke about it. The female guest to respond to Winwin’s last statement says, “For example, we had a fight because of [something]. Maybe it’s really my fault. But I think I can’t give in. I want him to go through the same thing I did.” Another female guest laughs and agrees, “Give back to the master, right?”

Some WayV fans tried to understand, “In fact, he was just telling the viewpoint of the book, not conveying any personal opinion, misogyny was just taken out of context.” Another said, “But he isn't talking about the book?? Want i understand It's just that his sister recommended him a book and he read it, and he's talking about the book. It doesn't mean he thinks like that, idk.”

Another fan brought back in the same episode when he was irked when a female guest talked about her demanding boyfriend, “WINWIN is respectful to girls. ①Right in the episode, when LiuYan says her bf's mom required her to cook a dish for the bf. WINWIN's immediate reaction was: How dare her! Why don't you break up with the man? LY: I didn't know how to appreciate myself then.”

One fan explained that even if Winwin said something unknowingly, the hate was uncalled for, “It is only right to acknowledge winwin's wrongdoings but twisting his words to paint him in a certain other way is not right. there is a difference between being ignorant — not knowing you did/said something wrong, & being misogynistic — purposely holding prejudice against women.”
