Spoilers for 'Devs' Episode 7

This chapter marks the precursor to the story's climax and starts answering a lot of burning questions that could possibly prepare you for what is to come. But before that, we want to talk about what the pre-finale episode meant.

In the last couple of episodes, the team of Devs, namely Katie and Forest had started to open up about the program and what it does. As predicted by the system, Lily and Jamie came face to face with Forest and Katie.

Instead of feeling threatened by them, Katie turned blunt and told Lily about everything that she wanted to hear, including how Lily’s death was predicted in the next 48 hours.

And now, Lily decides to defy the system and stay home instead. But when Kenton sneaks in with a gun and shoots Jamie and in a chain of events gets killed, Lily is left with no choice. This is where we see another interesting development.

The homeless stoner outside Lily’s apartment turns out to be a Russian spy, quite like Sergei, who is appointed to keep an eye on Lily and Sergei and protect them if required. He offers Lily a solution to save herself from the mess of murder charges, a series of interrogations and more chaos from authorities.

Now, Lily stands between two choices; either she decided to go to Devs, get the final answers, bring it all down, as predicted by Devs, or, stay put and eventually head out of the country to Hong Kong and save herself.

But we cannot say for sure whether she will be alive or not if she takes the second option. The program predicted her death, but it never said how she will die. Or it is possible that Katie knows and it’s not revealed to the audience yet.

There’s a valid reason if you want to believe that the predictions all might come true. After seeing what Lyndon did to himself and watching Katie cold-bloodedly let the kid jump off the dam and kill himself, even we would like to believe that anything could happen at this point.

Elsewhere, in the Devs office, the team of programmers finally manages to perfect the software, so much so that it starts to predict their own behavior for the next one second.

This not only freaks everyone out but also puts things in perspective for Suart. He breaks the news to Forest but is not at all satisfied, convinced, or feels good about what the team has done.

Forest and Katie seem to be waiting for something to happen. We are pretty sure by now that it’s not Lily’s death, but what it will signify. Seeing predictions come true in blood and flesh will probably give them more confidence is taking the program ahead and turning it into the ultimate controlling system for the society.

Here’s something we need to understand. Lily might have gone back to Devs, either to fall prey to the program or to destroy it; we can’t say that yet. But we can definitely say is that this could be a turning point in her story where she decides.

While predictive analysis might determine future behavior, one cannot forget how the theory of probability defines every human action and chain of events and has infinite possibilities of results than a deterministic program.

'Devs' Episode 7 is now available on FX on Hulu.
